Gorgeous place inside and out....but it's supposed to be a restaurant, and at that it failed the night we stopped in.

Raves in the Portland media (and the look and tone of Hamley's website) would have you believe the place is on the order of a top-drawer metropolitan steak house, with corresponding clientele and service - this is simply not so. We dressed for dinner only to observe numerous later guests arrive in untucked polos and shorts. I suppose that in today's economy they'll welcome anyone with a wallet but it was still disconcerting - but maybe also the fault of our own inflated expectations.

However, the playing field levels for all when the service begins and that's when the true failure of the house showed itself. Our table service was totally inept from start to finish, from an unseasoned server who was definitely not ready for prime time. Too many faults to enumerate here, but every one of them was basic (and correctable if anyone had cared to notice and address them, and we certainly threw off enough vibe for them to get the message). As for the food, the T-bone was acceptable and the ribs were actually pretty tasty...but they were preceded by a very weak Caesar and rolls served with an oddly-flavored butter (we guessed coconut) and followed by a slice of coconut cake with leaden frosting and less coconut essence than the butter.

On the way out I spoke with the hostess to get our server's name (we could tell it wasn't correct on the CC receipt) and the restaurant GM's name and contact info to share our experience - she could or would not provide either, nor did she inquire the reason for my asking.

If you really feel the need to see Hamley's, stick to the "saloon" side and menu. The saloon/bar isn't separated by much by the main dining area anyway.

We really wanted to see this place but were short on money and time. We decided to have drinks and apps in the bar. It really is a beautiful place, the woodwork, decor, tin ceilings and the ambience in the "saloon" was an excellent Pendleton experience. The staff was really nice and quite effecient. We split a caesar salad, a mushrooms/bread platter and some steak tips. It was so delicious, we will definitely be back to try dinner next time we come through town. If you can afford it, its a well deserved treat. It is obvious the owners take great pride in their business.

First, it's the most beautiful restaurant in town. Owners spent a ton of money on transforming an empty historic building into a real thing of western beauty. After going through many menu changes and price points, I think they're hitting their stride. We've eaten there 5+ times, and think lunch is a better bargain for great burgers, salads, soups, and a wide selection of beers on tap. Service is good, and the antique bar is gorgeous. The first time we went when they first opened the prices were over the top, service was poor, and the food quality was uneven, but I'd definitely recommend it for a casual lunch or special event.
