The Barclay House is right next to the McLoughlin House. It is the former house of Dr. Forbes Barclay who was an explorer and associate of John McLoughlin. He was employed by the Hudson Bay Company and sent to Fort Vancouver on the Columbia River. He Served as physician for the settlers and local townspeople.

The Barclay house was built in 1849 near the waterfront. It was moved to its present location in 1936. Right next to the McLoughlin House on top of Singer Hill Bluff overlooking the Willamette River in Oregon City, Both Houses have been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2003.

The Barclay House has a gift shop that has many books about Oregon history, postcards, and various other souvenir items. You can also find many fliers for places of interest between the gift shop and the museum office. The room further inside to the west is where the tour of the McLoughlin house starts. I keep looking at the tall black hat sitting on a chair to my right. The type of hat popular back in those days. Something you see in old photos of Abe Lincoln.

A sidewalk sign was standing in front of the walk up to the Barclay House with tour times for the day. Tours are open to the public for FREE on Fridays and Saturdays.

This is right next door to the McLaughlin house and they do not really tell you about this house and you see very little of it. This is were the gift shop is an the offices of the McLaughlin house. The good news is it is free and the gift shop is well stocked with Oregon books and products. This is part of the McLaughlin house tour, It is free so although not real exciting free is always fantastic!

This house served as the starting point for our tour of the McLoughlin House. I thought we were going to get a little more information and a tour of this house, but we did not. That's the only reason I rated it "average". The volunteers staffing the house were mainly involved with the tours for the McLoughlin House, they were very friendly and informed. Perhaps we should have asked more questions about the Barclay House and if they could show us around.
