Whenever we come to the coast we start craving seafood. There's no shortage of options in Newport but I don't think you'll find anything better than Local Ocean for several reasons. First of all, the meal we had was spectacular! We decided to try several things so we started with a house salad for each of us. We were surprised when the salads arrived and they anything but a small side salad. Next we shared a bowl on garlic crab soup that was so good that we had to stop occasionally and just savor the taste. It had just the right amount of garlic to offset the creamy texture and loads of local crab meat. By the time we finished our salads and soup they brought out the scallops we ordered and we were not disappointed. Although we were pretty well stuffed at that point we still practically licked the plates clean.
The walls of the dining room are all glass and we had a stunning view of the fishing vessels slowing leaving and returning to the harbor as well as the Yaquina Bay Bridge with the clouds turning pink as the sun set. We arrived at about 4:45 and were immediately seated and when we left at 6:00 there was a large group of people waiting for a table so plan accordingly! This restaurant does far more than pay lip service to buying local. In the area where they sell seafood the labels actually tell you where the fish is from and, as much as possible, the food you eat is locally sourced which means you might be eating something that came off one of the boats you can see anchored across the street.
