The food was excellent and the service was very good. We made this are only second restruant visit for our week in Newport. The view is very good but I would not say that the restruant is cozy.

“Best restaurant in Newport”
Reviewed March 6, 2006

It is difficult to find a nice restaurant on the Oregon Coast for one big reason: The seasonality of the tourist trade makes it extremely difficult to justify serving truly good food on a regular basis. That's why it's a safe bet to open a mediocre "Mo's" style cafe and just hire a few high school students in the summer time to run your dining room.
Such is not the case--it seems--with Saffron Salmon. We dined there on a Sunday night in early March, a time when most tourists are still snug in their Southern California homes.
The menu is quite small, focusing on locally-grown cuisine and wine. While I find the fact that nothing on the wine list was made more than 500 miles away quite admirable, my wife was disappointed that she couldn't order her cotes du rhone. We settled with a mid-priced Oregon Pinot Noir for $40.
We started with the goat cheese, which came with crostini and a wonderful olive tapenade. The crostini weren't too crusty, allowing the perfectly-prepared roasted garlic to soak into the bread very nicely. My wife ordered a bacon-wrapped steak filet with potatoes au gratin. The steak was cooked just shy of medium and was savory and tender. I ordered the saffron salmon, and found the rub to be much too salty--almost to the point of inedibleness. Luckily, the butter and saffron sauce had a suprisingly balanced mildness to it. The accompanying risotto cake was the best risotto I've ever tasted. Both of our plates came with local vegetables, which were nothing to write home about. All in all, I feel it was a very nice meal.
I felt that the multitude of bright spotlights and the 1980s decor give this place a total lack of ambience. The view is very nice, but the glare from the lights were annoying. The local artwork for sale on the walls made me a little uncomfortable; I kept thinking that someone was going to be looking over my shoulder to buy a painting or something.
Two good entrees (they come with small salads), a very nice app, bottle of pinot, and 20% tip came to $124. Well worth the price to know that Newport has a great restaurant. Now if only those lights had dimmer switches...

“fabulous!”
Reviewed November 25, 2005

Thanksgiving day 2005. An abbreviated, fixed price menu, some items from their regular menu and some special items, eg turkey.

Everything was wonderful -- atmosphere, service, and every food item. Highly, highly recommend this restaurant. Very upscale but not to the point of being snooty or stifling.

Restaurant sits on/over the bay in the historic bay district -- great pre/post meal wandering.

“Great”
Reviewed September 14, 2005

This place could just as easily be located in Portland. But it's all the more charming for being on the Yaquina Bay. Not far away you can hear the sea lions barking. Likely a sea gull or two will land on the railing outside the window to watch you eat. This place can be a little trickly to find as the entrance is on the side of the building. There aren't a ton of window seats, so maybe go at odd hours to get a better view. We went at 1 on a Monday and got great seats. They also take reservations. The calm chowder, bread and Salmon sandwich were all wonderful. So were the crab cakes. They have a good dessert menu as well, but on the day we were there they also offered a truffle for $1. What a great little something for when you're full but want something sweet. This place is slightly upscale and expensive, but much better than the other stuff you'll find on the Bayfront. Try it out.

“Great Food by the Bay”
Reviewed August 29, 2005

We recently had lunch at Saffron Salmon while on a trip to Depoe Bay. We drove down to Newport on a foggy morning to stroll the "historic" bayside. We found Saffron Salmon and were in for a treat. The food was very good, and I can imagine that the view of the bay lights after dark is probably spectacular. I highly recommend this chic bayside bistro. Great food and atmosphere.
