“Great restaurant among the fishing bars and chowder places”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

This is the second time we have eaten here and both times the food was great. It was recommended by friends in Portland. I had the wild salmon and it was cooked just right. For dessert we had the berry cobbler was more than the two us could eat. We had a great view of the ocean and it was fun to watch the Coast Guard do drills out at sea. This is one of the best places to eat in Newport

“Saffron Salmon”
Reviewed July 11, 2013

July 5,2013
We were a group of seven to celebrate a birthday. The group thought the fish stew, Caesar salad, and risotto were bland because not enough spices, fresh herbs, garlic and onions were used to prepare the food.
The chef even forgot to put the mussels in the fish stew and garlic in the Caesar salad. The food was bland, unfriendly service, small portions and very high prices.

“"Fireworks seating" at Saffron Salmon”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

We were on the Oregon coast during the 4th of July week celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary. We'd been to Saffron Salmon when it first opened about a decade ago after chef Michael Waliser left Spokane's Cafe 5-Ten and opened his seafood restaurant in Newport, a working fishing town with access to incredible fish and shellfish.

Saffron Salmon is intimate -- only 12 tables -- and we snagged a table for the July 4 "fireworks seating." The meal was memorable -- a delicious calamari appetizer with Italian sparkling wine, then halibut and albacore tuna followed by rasberry sorbet. On cue, the fireworks began at 10 a.m. and we had a waterfront seat!

“Good food, awkward & disappointing departure...asked to leave as soon as dessert was done...don't plan to linger”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

We discovered the Saffron Salmon via a AAA guide book and several word of mouth recommendations. The location was pristine - bayside Newport - and the establishment small and intimate. We were celebrating the 4th of July and treating my brother and sister-in-law for their anniversary. We see them rarely and were quite excited to share a delightful meal.

We started with a delicious appetizer and migrated to fresh seafood entrees all the way around. The food was great and the wine list was comparable to the level of the cuisine. The fresh halibut was especially good. We rounded out our meal with desserts for all - good, but not amazing - and settled in for some really nice conversation and finishing our wine.

That was when things began to get odd. We knew there were firework reservations later in the evening, but didn't know what time they started. After we finished our dessert, they began clearing the table while we were still seated and conversing. Wine glasses, then water glasses, then extra plates - everything. They interrupted our rare family time (we had a sitter for our infant son) because there was another reservation who had the table. I understand, in some ways, but when you sit down for a really nice meal, you don't monitor time. A head's up would have been very appreciated and they could have handled the request to leave better.

Aside from that, we had a great experience, but based on being asked to leave, we definitely left with a touch of bitterness in our mouths. We certainly didn't skimp on dinner or wine and hadn't finished our desserts more than 5 or 10 minutes before being asked to vacate. For a nice restaurant it just wasn't appropriate.
