We stayed one night at the Whaler, with lots of fog clouding our view of the beach. I had picked the hotel for the water front view, and only got a quick glimpse the next morning as we left. The room was a standard beach area room, neat and clean. The front desk staff were all very friendly and helpful. It was a 10 minute walk to Nye Beach, which had only 2 restaurants to choose from, and not any shopping that I could see. The historic downtown area was about a mile away, which we did walk, but there are big hills included, ( we sure don't have them in Florida! ) There is a free shuttle running back and forth which no one seems to know anything about. That was a life saver on the way back! Breakfast was big muffins, coffee and juice, which you take to your room. Nothing fancy for a standard room, but I understand they have rooms with fireplaces for a more special evening.

I agree with some previous reviews that the room décor is dated but because of the direct ocean view, I think the price of the room was very reasonable. Our King Balcony Jr. Suite was large and very clean. The vanity/sink was outside the bathroom, which I like. We didn’t have any problems with noise from other rooms. Our room had a small window which we left open at night so we could hear the ocean.

We knew before we booked the room that there was no elevator but chose a 3rd floor room because previous Trip Advisor reviews mentioned that the views were better from the upper floors. I don’t think most 1st floor rooms have much a view because of foliage growing in front of the windows.

Our main complaint was that the bottom sheet was too small for a king size bed and constantly became untucked. Our bathtub also drained very slowly. The small refrigerator did not have a freezer compartment.

After traveling for two weeks, this was the worst hotel for us. About the view - you can only see a blur through the salty mist on the windows, so there really is no "view". The sheets were clean, but the blankets were not - and management just said, "okay" without suggesting a solution. Sink was stopped up - so had to run water intermittently (other guests said the same thing), and management just said, "okay, what do you want us to do?". Dirty furniture and floor - and management said they do only occasional spot cleaning (why not everyday spot cleaning?) No AC - typically cool there anyway, but expect to hear sounds through the walls as there is no "fan" feature in their heating system to make a quiet steady sound. No elevator, so good luck if you are on the third floor. Very small sink. Older place, with early '80's decor (gold trimmed frames of posters). Overpriced. Overall, we were eager to get out, quite disappointed in this hotel, and more interested in the other hotels in the area in a future visit.

We stayed at the Whaler motel in Newport in late July as a quick getaway to the coast. I must say, the view was excellent! We sat for well over an hour admiring the ocean. The room was large and clean, amenities included a hair dryer, coffee pot and mini refrigerator, and the staff very friendly, but I thought that for the price we paid, it could have definitely been nicer. The room was on par with a Super 8 at the price of a Sheraton. We checked at the Best Western ten miles up the coast which was less expensive and nicer, but they had no vacancy. The "continental breakfast" didn't include many choices, but what they did have was very good. Beach access was great, and my only other complaint was that the wall mounted lamps between the beds didn't work, but I'm sure that will be fixed eventually.

We loved staying in the Whaler's newly refurbished Deluxe Kings rooms. We liked the bed so much, we wished we could take it home with us. we have stayed there before and are always delighted with their hospitality and kindness.

My 3 kids and I went to Newport over the Memorial Day weekend. Our room was located on the third floor which had a wonderful ocean view. Although the rooms and a few other things (vending machines, washer/dryer, etc.) were a bit dated everything was very clean, comfortable and in working order. The continental breakfast was adequate, but could include just a bit more selection. The kids very much enjoyed the unlimited popcorn and hot chocolate. Since we spent most of our time sightseeing, the room was everything we needed over the 3 day holiday weekend. We all enjoyed the pool and spa and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. For the value minded who don't want to give up a great ocean view with easy beach access, this is a fantastic place to stay. We couldn't have been more pleased with The Whaler.

Want to step out your motel doorway and be on the beach? Well the Whaler Motel is a top spot in my book. Beautiful 180 degree views of the Pacific Ocean, the Lighthouse at Yaquina Head and sandy strand [beach]. If you love the ocean like I do then this place is a must stay. Great facilities, many different types of rooms and even homes to rent. All beachside, within easy walking distance of restaurants and great little shops. Motel is very kid friendly, free popcorn, breakfasts and the like. Pool and jacuzzi, but we spend our time on the beach....
