They have everything you need for a coastal getaway and walking distance to Nye beach food & fun. Bed was clean & comfortable. Hotel staff were very accommodating and friendly. We booked two adjacent rooms, as our folks were joining us and check-in was a breeze. We will make The Whaler our first choice for future visits to the Newport Beach area.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor room for best ocean front view - new elevator makes luggage transport a breez...

Am just about to pack up and leave this gem of a Motel having been for a swim in the pool, a dip in the hot tub and enjoyed a good quality help-yourself Motel-style breakfast.

If that wasn't enough, yesterday afternoon we were on the small deck of our 2nd floor room (1st floor if you're from the UK) basking in the sunshine and watching whales a short way out to sea.

The rooms are large and clean, I'd guess updated in the last couple of years, and the Motel is a short walk from the Nye Beach area.

A great experience and highly recommended.

Room Tip: Pay the small premium for a 2nd or 3rd floor room to get a better view of the Ocean

The Whaler is ideally located in a quiet neighborhood, on top of a bluff with a direct view of the Pacific ocean. Across the street is a paved path to a long beach. From The Whaler it is a short stroll to the Nye Beach neighborhood for shopping and dining.

Rooms are simple but quiet and clean. Every room has a small balcony and a great view. People are friendly.

The continental breakfast is no great shakes - basically bagels, muffins, and cereal. No microwave in the rooms, either, although the rooms do have small refrigerators.

We go back every year for a few days. It is a quiet, lovely place to unwind.

Room Tip: They all have great ocean views

We stayed for 2 nights and had a mixed experience at The Whaler. The location was great, just across the road from a beautiful beach and a short drive to the bay area. The room itself was fine, nothing fancy but clean and comfortable and the view from the balcony to the seafront was lovely. The complimentary breakfast wasn’t much to write home about but it was sufficient for our needs. The staff were friendly and daughter enjoyed the free popcorn in the lobby.

Our main problem was the noise. We were on the ground floor and must have had the world’s worst insomniac in the room above. This “considerate” guest, in their shoes, paced the floor until 3 a.m. when finally all went quiet and we think they may have checked out. There was no phone in the room so we didn’t contact reception until the next morning. The staff were apologetic and offered us an alternative room on the third floor just above the reception area. However, we had to pay extra for this “upgrade;” the new room was slightly smaller and had exactly the same amenities.

We were grateful to be relocating to the top floor but then had to spend some of our valuable holiday time transferring our belongings upstairs – thankfully there was an elevator. Imagine our dismay when everything quietened down that evening we found we had been placed close to some noisy equipment that droned all night – fortunately earplugs kept the worst of this at bay.

I have found this a tricky review to write. Whilst the inconsiderate guest was not the hotels fault, they could, under the circumstances, have given a little more thought to the substitute room offered, especially as we had to pay for the privilege.

Given our experience we wouldn’t stay here again, but if you do, then definitely request a 3rd floor room away from the entrance.

Room Tip: Request a room on the 3rd floor

My family of four stayed at this hotel in mid-August. We made a good choice, thanks to other trip advisor reviews. It is located right across the road from the beach and not too far from the highway. The view was fantastic as was the cool breeze coming in from the small patio. No need for a/c; I was actually looking for a sweater because it was so cold outside. This hotel is nothing fancy. It is however the cleanest hotel we stayed in on our three week long road trip. I mean spotless! The beds were super comfortable, the sheets crisp clean and the towels were soft and fluffy. The pillows, however where teeny, tiny little balls of fluff. Breakfast was available in the hotel lobby. There was limited, I mean very limited, seating and guests are encouraged to take their breakfast to their room. We ate breakfast gazing at the view and listening to the crashing ocean waves. Great way to start the day. Staff was very friendly and helpful in suggesting dinner options. Hotel has a pool, but we did not use it. The hotel is a three story building and was booked solid the night we stayed. We had a third floor room and experienced no loud disturbances. Highly recomended!

Bagged the last 2 rooms here after arriving late on a Saturday night in the resort with no reservations. What luck! Clean spacious rooms. Decent bathroom. Good wifi connection. Adequate breakfast. Enjoyed our overnight stay

Room Tip: We had no balcony rooms which were cheaper for budget travellers

Great place to stayover. Rooms clean and functional. Very competitive in the are. Pool and Spa excellent. Staff friendly. Breakfast basic but does its job. Recommended for travellers who want a one night stay. In fact had we had the time we would have stayed on another night.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view
