If you go here during normal breakfast/lunch/dinner hours you'll likely have to wait for a counter seat or table to open up; this speaks about the popularity of this mom and pop restaurant. The place is small with no ambiance, but the food is great. We've had the seafood burrito, fried clams, shrimp, and clam chowder, but my favorite was the fried calamari steak. The menu is large and the portions huge. We eat here every time we pass thru Newport and are never disappointed by the quality of the food or the service.

They try to be more than they are, and they could stand to be a little cleaner. The eggs and taters were greasy, The biscuits tasted like butter flavor industrial ick...The waitstaff are nice and try hard...it seems to be a family affair.

I was new to the area and was looking for a quick bite. Wait staff was courteous but was mainly standing around by the register. I ordered fish and chips with a soda and was blown away by how gross it was. The batter was soggy, oily and with a crude smell. It was obvious that the fry oil was old and it wasn't hot enough to cook the batter properly. The "home-made house fries" were under cooked and under seasoned. My friend, who had ordered a cheeseburger, mentioned that it was "ok but nothing special". Maybe the cook instead of texting his girlfriend (cook visible from counter top seating) should have put a little bit more attention to what he was serving people. What grossed me out the worst was the appearance of the kitchen walking up to the register. There was a overly-full FLY TRAP near the register (where also your food goes by) that was soo full, it looked like someone hadn't changed it in months. The kitchen appearance looked greasy and dirty. I would be ashamed to own that place and serve food! Anyway, shortly after leaving I started experiencing food poisioning like syptoms. It ended very badly... trust me!

I have a rule about dining out on vacation: it has to be unique, local, preferably family owned and maybe a bit funky. Newport Cafe scored a perfect ten in all categories. So what, you can't see the coast? You can fill your belly with a seafood burrito and have a dang good cup of chowder! Not to mention, the family runs it! I love that. And they are warm, friendly and eager to make you feel at home and satisfied. Ask them what item on the menu will change your life. Eat the 7 pound burger and you can change into bigger pants. Go there on a date. Take your grandma there. Buy the mug, dangit. This place is an all American diner run by a family and full of good food and friendly feelings.....
