“No appologies from manager”
Reviewed August 20, 2009

The beach and location are a hidden gem BUT the cabin we stayed in (#6) and the manager were awful. Other cabins looked much better (#2, 3, 5 & 9). Cabin #6 was run down and the back of the cabin slanted. Within the 1st hour the kitchen sink faucet broke off and sprayed water everywhere. The manager absolutely made no appologies and looked annoyed. She did not offer us another room or a discount from our stay. The sink was not fixed during our stay. We had to take our chances of getting sprayed when washing our dishes. The toilet need plunging daily. Bottom line - great location but cabin needs desperate fixing, TLC and beautification.

Happy Camp Hideaway was reccomended to us by my brother. He was driving around on the coast of Oregon looking for a place for us to stay for Thanksgiving and he happened upon Happy Camp Hideaway. We arrived, expecting a bit more luxury than we found and we left with a big satisfied grin.

Happy Camp Hideaway reminded me of one of those places we stayed at when we were kids. You know, the cabin on the lake that had a linoleum braided rug. It is sure not fancy. Pets are allowed and the cabin we were given when we arrived had kind of a pet odor. That was OK because out the sliding glass doors was the ocean. The furniture was eclectic, the dishes didn't match, the yard was cluttered and really needs someone to back a dumptruck up to it and pull all the junk out from behind and under the cabins, stick it in the bed of the truck and drive to the dump. But that first evening we walked out onto the front porch and heard it, the roar of the tide coming in. The Pacific Ocean was right there, almost at our doorstep.

Our second day at Happy Camp we discovered that the phone didn't work. Our very accomodating hostess told us that we could change cabins because we needed a phone. We moved into the top floor of the largest cabin at Happy Camp Hideaway. WOW! It was just the most happy place I have ever stayed in. Once again, the dishes didn't match but who cares! We were on the second floor and could look out across the beach and see . . . fog. Yep, there was a lot of that. We knew the ocean was there but we didn't see much of it. We could sure hear it though. The cabin was cozy and just plain wonderful. There was a lovely little nook where I could sit and drink my coffee and look at the ocean. Well, look the direction of the ocean, knowing that it was there, just shrouded in fog. We had one gorgeous day when we could see across Netarts Bay. It was stupendous. Just beyond the Bay the ocean was hurling itself wildly against sea stacks. It sounded like a train. Sea birds sailed over the waves making those noises that sea birds make. We are from the mountains of North Carolina so all of this was very exotic, strange and wonderful to us.

Happy Camp Hideaway is not for everyone. If you are looking for a condo with all the modern amenities, don't stay here! Some of those places are just up the road. If you want a place that is close to everything, right on the beach, decorated with furniture that has been in the family for decades, is run by a rather eccentric woman, this could be the place for you.

Netarts is not a thriving tourist mecca. It is, however, not far from Tillamook, Cape Lookout State Park, Cape Meares State Park and just a bunch of beautiful scenery. A short walk up the beach is Oceanside with little touristy shops and a rather pricey restaurant. Tillamook has a couple of terrific cheese factories, some good restaurants, a lot of cows and just some really nice, friendly people. All in all, our vacation to Oregon was lovely. Happy Camp Hideaway was the perfect place to start and end our day.

I would hesitate to recommend this place to just anyone. It is very old, some would say it is run down. It has taken a beating from the ocean and withstood sand, salt and waves. If you are looking for a place that is close to the ocean, has a stunning view on a nice day (that happens sometimes), lets you bring your dog and is just different, Happy Camp Hideaway could be the perfect place for you. When I checked below that I would recommend this place to a friend I have to do so with this warning: I wouldn't recommend it to all of my friends. It would be great for a family reunion with kids running all over the place. It would be wonderful for a weekend retreat with friends who like to sit by a fire and roast hot dogs or clams or whatever people eat in Oregon. In good weather, the covered porch at the large cabin would be a perfect place to sit and enjoy the ocean while sipping little drinks with umbrellas. We loved Happy Camp Hideaway but we say this knowing that not everyone would share our opinion and a lot of folks would think we are kind of crazy.
