It's a lazy, winding body of water enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Easy access to food and lodging nearby. You'll have a good outdoor adventure any time of year.

Lower part of the river is influenced by the tide: for an easier trip, head upstream with the incoming and float downstream with the outgoing. Paddle past estuaries, streams, towns, pastures, homes, bridges, rails and wilderness. Two directions to travel: South Fork or North Fork. Wonderful trip for bird watching. There are eagles and their nests along the way, keeping company with waterfowl, and shrubland and tree dwellers. If you are lucky, you'll see a friendly otter or a curious seal, or elk skinny-dipping at the river's edge. There are public docks in Wheeler and Nehalem, with restaurants near each. One of these days, I'd like to try to go up the S. Fork all the way to the falls. Probably need a wet suit and hiking boots, though.

Stayed at campground several times recently with family only and then friends....The beach is awesome and the river is beautiful to kayak on and canoe and/or sit on river shore and clam and drink a beer. great for pictures. I have stayed all around the bay and enjoy it rain or shine:) A must visit while on the coast. I have been been crabbing as well

Found a deal on VRBO, didn't know what to expect. When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised. The cabin was very comfortable with a full kitchen, bedroom and loft, front deck with swing facing the river just feet away, and all the entertainment options including Wifi. What a perfect central point for exploring the coast. Manzanita and Cannon Beach to the north and Tillamook and Pacific City to the south. Fishing, crabbing and dynamite beaches everywhere and a nice home to come back to. Try Pelican Pub Brewery in Pacific City and drive on the beach. The mom and pop grocery in Manzanita is a must.

I'm staying at The Nehalem shores on the river; you can watch the birds, the seals and the otters or the Elk. The view is great and picturesque from almost anywhere. If you follow the R.R. track up river you can reach Nehalem Falls camp ground and park, a beautiful place to camp, visit or swim
