I used the Hollyhock Cottage as a home base for exploring the Painted Hills (10 min.away), and the John Day Fossil beds (20 min. away).

The cottage is fully equipped with everything you need, (full size stove/oven, microwave, mini fridge, cooking & eating utensils). All you have to bring is food and drink if you're going to prepare your own meals.

The bed is comfortable enough and there are plenty of windows to provide natural light and ventilation. There was no A/C when I was there but it wasn't needed. The cottage is surrounded by trees and shrubs along with the wonderful garden, which provides a lot of privacy so you don't have to worry about leaving all the shades open. The downside is that there is no clear view of sunrise or sunset and is why I gave 4 stars overall.

I enjoyed chatting with Barb and Aruna as I was leaving each morning to explore, and they provided information that helped me to find a couple of places and trails I would likely have missed otherwise.

The bottom line is that I will go back to this area again and if the Hollyhock is available that's where I'll stay.

Bright and cheerful inside and out! This well-equipped cottage was more than we had expected! Wonderful colors, decor, and artwork throughout the comfortable cottage, we had more room than you'd usually get from a rental. Beds, shower and bath, living areas, and the kitchen were just wonderful, and there were great movies to watch after having a day exploring all of the unusual sights of the John Day fossil bed area. The gardens were wonderful with flowers and herbs blooming everywhere. We enjoyed happy hour in the red chairs, and picked herbs to go in our potato dishes, salads, dips, and eggs--which were delivered by Aruna fresh from her hen house! A favorite day was spent swimming and picnicking at Priest's Hole, and there are information magazines and maps at the cottage for your use. I've lived in Oregon my whole life (58 years!!) and hadn't explored the area. Fun for myself and my three 20-ish daughters, who also loved the hikes, swimming, and fossil hunting of Eastern Oregon. We hope to be back!

Best Place to be in Spring!
I’ve just came back from my second stay at the Painted Hills Cottage in 2 years and am so full of awe about what a special place the owners Barb and Aruna have created in the middle of nowhere. My first stay summer of 2011 was already so memorable but this one topped it off! The garden was like out of a picture book, full of colors and scents of blooming bushes and flowers. Hundreds of tulips were peeking out from every corner and the first humming bird was buzzing around. The cottage was as I’ve remembered, so cozy and bright but with a few more additions like a new nook for accommodating an extra guest and new dishes and curtains. The weather was wonderful for hiking, not too warm, with a bit of wind and my 2 friends and I were out and about during the day, enjoying our evenings dining in the garden and sleeping so restful in the cozy beds.
We will be back for sure and will tell everyone who’s heading to Eastern Oregon to stay at this lovely spot.

My husband and I wanted a place where we could spend mornings writing and afternoons exploring the John Day National Monument Fossil Beds. The Painted Hills Cottage was a perfect choice. Even though we stayed in October, the gardens were still beautiful, the last roses in bloom, the layers of plantings, their leaves, varying heights, shapes, patterns and colors, adding to the magic. The cottage was spotless and very well appointed. The beds with the European comforters and pillows were excellent. Many chairs, couches and accompanying reading lamps made it easy for both of us to read and write. The kitchen had everything for cooking, including offerings of olive oil and spices.
There were only two of us for several nights and when my sister and brother-in-law joined us. there was still plenty of room, the two bedrooms separated by the single bath, the kitchen with an island and counter for preparing meals. Aruna and Barbara had warned us that there wouldn’t be much food available so we’d come prepared but we enjoyed the cafes locally too and had good chowder and burgers. Definitely bring fresh vegetables and fruits! The area is astonishing, one of the most awe inspiring in all of Oregon. The time we spent was indeed a “Journey Out of Time” and as we played cards in the garden in adirondacks set in the little apple orchard, we felt on vacation and at home.

We had the pleasure of staying at the bigger of the 2 cabins and were SO happy with our choice here! My husband is an amateur photographer - so thoroughly enjoyed being able to make it to the Painted Hill's Unit of John Day for sunrise & sunset photos of the fascinating landscape, which was only 20 minutes away. Magical, beautiful area! The worries of the world seem to slip away there!! (note that although the cottages are not in a remote area by itself - actually between houses on a small plot of land in the small town of Mitchell - once you are in the gated grounds of the cottage with the surrounding garden - you feel you are more remote). The beds were super comfortable & the house was spotless & kitchen was truly fully stocked (even some condiments that we forget were there - olive oil, vinegar, etc PLUS of course the farm-fresh eggs & fresh tomatoes!) For you future travelers to Mitchell - in reading some of the reviews of the area - since we stayed there 5 full days/nights we realized it was important to stock up on food prior to our stay (we got it at Fred Meyers in Redmond w/cooler), as the town is so small, we knew that the restaurant & grocery store (basics only) would not be open when we would come back from our excursions. Just a bit of advice! Who cared - we had a great kitchen to make breakfasts/dinners & put our lunches together every day in order to explore the area!

A bonus was the beautiful Bosch washer that we used - our clothes have never gotten so clean on hiking trip before! Barbara & Aruna, the owners, obviously take a lot of pride in keeping the grounds so beautiful & they are VERY attentive to any needs you may have! They had a lot of information on the area on a desk when we arrived & said we could help ourselves to anything in garden!! Also, we drove to the other 2 units of the John Day Monument from here as well on separate days - it was beautifully situated to get to all of the Units.

We are already planning future trips out to this beautiful area & staying at the cottage - which we noq consider a home away from home! Thank you so much Barbara & Aruna!!!!

Thank you for your enthusiasm about our place and this awe inspiring area. September is a special time here with golden light and long shadows. The summer heat has given way to mild days and cold crisp nights and hiking is fantastic at this time of the year. We are looking forward to see you next year and the Bosch washer is waiting for you too :-)

We spent five awesome nights here in late August with our two dogs. The cottage was perfect for us, and the fenced yard with grass was perfect for the dogs! There was a dozen fresh eggs in the fridge, along with cherry tomatoes from Aruna's garden, which was a special treat. The cottage was charming and welcoming, and very comfortable for just hanging out. We spent a lot of time sitting in the Adirondack chairs in the garden, and ended up eating in more often than we had anticipated, given the fresh food and the fact the was kitchen was so well stocked, as well as the incredible peace and beauty of the garden. We also visited all three units of the John Day Fossil Beds, and drove to the various "ghost towns" in the area. The scenery in the area is beautiful. I have rented a lot of vacation houses with my family over the years, and all of the minor annoyances I've experienced in the past with other rentals had already been addressed by the owners of this rental (i.e., everything you need to cook/eat in; LOTS of places to hang towels or robes in the bathroom; an abundance of plush towels, etc.) We have been telling everyone we know about this wonderful place, and will definitely be returning in the near future.

If you looking for a truly relaxing and peaceful experience then look no further than Painted Hills Vacation Rentals. We stayed at the Holly Hock Guest house( 2 adults 2 children). It was blissful. Aruna has painstakingly manicured the grounds into an oasis of plum trees, grape vines, strawberry and raspberry planys and host of plants to create a beautiful canopy to relax under. There are wonderful spaces on the grounds to hide away and relax on a chaise lounge, dine surrounded by horticulture or pick the fruit and herb varieties for your consumption...and the surrounding area (the painted hills, the John Day river, the fossil beds) are amazing for the fsamily to explore...We'll be back again, and again, and again...
