On a recent road trip to explore all three of the John Day Fossil Beds, I decided to bunk down in Mitchell, Oregon, due to the great proximity to all of the sites. I stayed three nights at The Sky Hook Motel, a six unit motel that sits on the hill above the town of Mitchell. Clean and comfortable, the water hot, and the basic amenities of a small kitchen sink area and a separate bath with shower worked well for me. I was traveling alone (single woman) so I did not need one of the more spacious units, with additional bedrooms and full kitchen. My room had a microwave and a small portable fridge, along with a small television (which I did not use). Since it was May (2014), the temperature was just right, so I didn't use the heat. No pretension here, the motel is worn for wear, but cozy and comfortable; the rates were reasonable. The owner is quick to accommodate any need you might have (I forgot sunscreen; who forgets sunscreen when going to these parts! Thanks, Denny, for coming to the rescue). If I find myself heading in this direction again, I would stay here again. Warning: for those who are addicted to your devices, there is no cell phone service in the area. The Sky Hook Motel does have WiFi.

We were wanting to visit the painted hills at John Day Fossil Memorial and booked a room at Sky Hook in the very small town of Mitchell. The close proximity to the hills allowed us to visit during peak photography times. The rooms were quaint with homey touches. It was small but served it's purpose. There was only one three pronged plug in the room so we had to use the bathroom outlet. Quaint and quiet but clean.

We were traveling with our adult daughter and son-in-law to visit the John Day Fossil Beds area. The 2 bedroom unit we rented was perfect for our needs. The kitchen included a microwave, coffee pot, range, and refrigerator. There was even a small living room area. The beds were comfortable and the unit clean. The only negative was the bathroom, which was small. The 4 of us had varying experiences with the shower and hot water ( two of our group had great showers). There were picnic tables and chairs outside as well as a fire pit. They seemed very inviting for a warmer season. As others said, it is old and more like a cabin at summer camp than a Holiday Inn Express, but its comfortable and somehow seems perfect for the setting.

We stayed here on a road trip to the Painted Hills. We arrived after 9:00 and let ourselves in (we'd arranged it with the owner). It was pretty much as the other reviews suggested: more charming than frumpy, really a mixture of both. It a larger town I'd run screaming from it, in a teeny-tiny little central Oregon town it was perfect. It had had a somewhat recent bathroom remodel which was a nice touch, and everything was very clean. It had a front room with a twin bed, microwave, simple coffee maker (+ tea), a loveseat, a small table, and a small TV w/ DirecTV and a separate bedroom with the queen. The only window screen was in the bathroom, but we were fine with the bedroom ceiling fan on an 85-degree night. High-speed wireless too.

Somehow our quirky/average room really added to the whole experience. There's a very nice strip of lawn in front of the rooms and it's set back and above the road. We arrived at dusk, and the combination of the room, laying on the lawn looking at the stars, and nothing louder than the cicadas was perfect and I wouldn't mind staying there again although I might bring my own comforter, their blankets were fine just old.

There's one small grocery in town, didn't go inside - recommend you bring your own food if you want something more than the small cafes (one is cash-only).

Denny and Becky are very nice and friendly proprietors. The accomodations are '50s rustic, with old decor, and a bit past charming, but tidy and clean. There are only 5 units -- I recommend getting one of the two 2-bedroom units if available, as they have full kitchens and larger bathrooms. No Air conditinoing, so it will be hot in summer; little ceramic wall heaters. We had nice weather so it wasn't an issue for this trip. It is handy to the Painted Hills.

Room Tip: Try for the two-bedroom units
