There are not many choices in Merrill to eat a good meal but if you are willing to go the extra mile for breakfast skip Klamath Falls, Alturas, and Tule Lake and come here. I have ate at Pappy's many times and by far they serve the greatest breakfast in the region. The staff is friendly and at times fun to interact with. The food is excellant and by the way bring an appitite because the portions are extremely generous. Yes, the potatoes are awesome! If you are up for it and have the time walk around Merrill a little too, its a great town and is always friendly.

A TripAdvisor review sent us to Pappy Gander's restaurant - the only choice in town and probably the best between Alturas and Klamath Falls. The region is loaded with acres and acres of potatoes and that is a big item on the menu. I ordered a BLT which was excellent, and it came with a HUGE heap of french fries - excellent but excessive.

I stopped here for breakfast on a whim on my way from Klamath Falls to Lava Beds National Monument. I had the best French toast of any restaurant I've eaten at before, the eggs were cooked perfectly to order, the bacon was the way it should be (not burnt, not raw), the coffee was great, and the staff was friendly and quick on their toes. The food was well worth the price, about $10.

I enjoyed it so much that I came back for dinner on my way back from the caves, and ordered a cheeseburger with French fries and a cup of chili with onions and cheese. The chili was great and the burger was as well. The fries were pretty good, though they could have used another minute or so in the fryer as the insides had that in-between texture where they aren't soft and cooked but they aren't quite raw either. All in all, a great restaurant!

Pappy Gander's is your hometown cafe from thirty years ago. The mashed potatoes have real lumps in 'em, the chicken fried steaks have REAL cream gravy, and the breakfasts are robust and tasty.

Look, if you want fancy five star eatin', this ain't the place. But if you want honest down-home cookin', and lots of it, here's your best bet in three hundred miles. The floors are linoleum, the furniture is aging, but the cooking is out of this world. I stop here every time I'm passing through. If you miss those mom-n-pop restaurants of years past, (right down to the horse trailer in the parking lot and John Deer ballcaps at the counter) make a point of timing your visit to enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner here. It's so worth the trouble, and if you go away hungry, it's your own darned fault.

Hope to see the folks there next month, when I'm up for some border collie doings. ;-)

We went to Pappy Gander's Restaurant in Merrill while visiting Lava Beds National Monument. I recommend this diner. Our family had two good meals there. Simple and basic but well made. They use potatoes and onions grown locally. Their home fries were great. There is something everybody will like so your family will be happy.
