Owner description: A scenic lake with good fishing.

We made the mistake of going on Friday and Saturday nights. Quiet time, we were told, was after 10. This was not at all enforced. If you are in a tent it is hopeless to try to sleep before 1AM and then the cars started at 6 AM. Noisiest campground ever. Perhaps other days of the week might be better. Rather than being relaxed and refreshed, we are exhausted.

Surrounded by green trees with a view of Mount McLaughlin it is one of the most beautiful places. Heaven on Earth.

Rent a boat and putt putt around. Have a decent meal at the restaurant. Have a leisurely walk around the lake. Bird watching? Bald Eagles, Blue Herons and White Pelicans are just some. Fishing? Trout and Bigmouth Bass

This lake is know for it's afternoon winds and "they say" it's the perfect sailing lake. I'm not a sailor, but there are a lot of them out there on the lake. :)

Did I mention the campgrounds? I think there are 2 state or county campgrounds and 2 that are run by the Howard Prairie Resort. We have stayed in the resort RV park on 2 occasions and found it quiet and relaxing. Nestled in the trees, as opposed to a parking lot, with a view of the lake is where we found ourselves.

We moved to Oregon in 2004 and after our first visit here we knew we needed to get a pontoon boat to keep up here...this would be our retreat. We finally managed to do that in 2007. We have not been sorry. The new owners, Joel and Holly, and their staff have taken good care of us.

We spent a couple of days at Howard Prairie Lake last week/end and loved it. It is a gorgeous, peaceful place. We were only their for a couple of boat rides and a short walk around part of the lake, but we loved the time we spent there and plan to go back. It is quiet (we only saw one jet ski and it stuck to a small end of the lake, and only saw one water skier...most folks on the lake were fishing or sailing). There are several camping and picnicking areas. The weekend days we were there they looked populated, but not packed, the weekday we were there was very quiet/empty.
We had amazing wildlife sightings, seeing two bald eagles, several osprey (one diving in for a fish) and many other birds. We did not catch any fish, but did not try that hard either...there are trout and bass in the lake if you are into fishing.
I would highly recommend this for a day trip from Ashland (only about a 30-40 min drive and a beautiful one at that) or for camping destination.
