We hiked Rainey Falls Trail, a 4 mile roundtrip trail on the south side of the Rogue River. This trail is poorly maintained by the Bureau of Land Management! In places the trail is only 2 feet wide with dangerous 40 foot drop offs to the Rogue River. Hiking books rate it as "Easy" but don't be fooled. Even though the trail has only mild elevation gains and drops, it has tricky areas where you must cross hillside streams that are maybe 4-10 feet in width and climb over awkward boulders. You definitely need to take hiking poles. There is no cellphone service along the trail and for five miles when you're driving to the trailhead. If someone gets hurt, it takes two hours after you drive to the nearest phone (in Galice,OR) for 2 paramedics to arrive and stabilize the patient and another two hour harrowing ride in a stokes stretcher requiring 10 heroic firefighters to safely transport the patient back to the trailhead! Evacuation by boat or helicopter is not usually available. Although it is a scenic hike, it is not recommended because of the poor hiking condition of the trail.
