Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum is located in the middle of the Willamette Valley and we really didn't expect to find anything very exciting. But we were traveling along Interstate 5 Highway and decided to take the short detour over to McMinnville and check it out. What a shock! This place is huge and first class in every sense of the word. The facility and the collection are unparalleled on the West Coast and the retired military aviators who serve as docents add a special element to the experience. The IMAX Theatre has a variety of wonderful educational films and every seat provides an excellent view. Each building has a restaurant, but we recommend having lunch in the Space Museum building. Don’t rush your visit because it will take a full day to see and do everything.

Home of the Spruce Goose, the largest wooden airplane in the world, this is one of the great airplane museums in the world. It has several sections devoted to different eras of airplanes, as well as engines. Separate buildings, which we did not have time for, display space artifacts, IMAX, and a waterpark. You can walk into the Spruce Goose and, for a fee, have your picture taken in the cockpit. The bad side: access from I-5 takes an hour of driving on a road through communities with dozens of stoplights. Also, access to it is not well signed. Advice: use your GPS navigator.

What a great museum and a pleasant way to spend a rainy day. Along with the Spruce Goose, they have an excellent Space exhibit. building.

Each time we have out of town visitors, we always make the nice hour drive from Portland to McMinnville just to see the museum. We spend the morning walking through the old planes, exploring inside some of them and, of course, going inside the Spruce Goose. Even our teen visitors are in awe of it ! Although you can take a picnic lunch, we always visit the museum's deli for lunch and then spend the afternoon enjoying the space museum and/or the Omnimax Theater. We plan to swim at the Wings & Waves waterpark when we bring school age visitors. It is a great stop on the way to the Oregon coast or as a day trip from Portland. There are many wineries along the way between Portland and McMinnville as well.

The grounds contain a water park with a 747 on top of the building , the main building containing the Spruce Goose and many bother aircraft , a space museum featuring inspiring speeches from president Kennedy. In addition there is an excellent IMAX theatre with real 3D capability.
You could easily spend a morning here or most of a day if your kids go to the water park.
