Joseph Mattey House
Ranked #4 of 8 McMinnville B&B and Inns
Reviewed February 22, 2013

This B and B is a little off the beaten track - around four miles out of McMinnville and so walking to dinner is not really possible. It is an old farmhouse that overlooks a small vineyard. Jack and Denise are the ever-present, friendly, knowledgable and chatty hosts. They knew a lot about the area, the wineries, the monasteries, the restaurants and just about everything else you might need to know. There are several small towns within a 15 minute drive, each with several restaurants and wineries, and Jack knew them all (and was known by these business people). He had free wine tasting passes for a lot of the wineries which was a real money saver. The bedrooms were all upstairs, quite steep for some people perhaps, but were nicely furnished and the bathrooms were adequate and, important in early February, nicely heated. We stayed for three nights and breakfast was different each day, always one fruit- based first course and fresh fruit biscuits/scones. The hot dish was always tasty too. We enjoyed our stay there.

Room Tip: If you are physically challenged the stairs are quite steep

We stayed at The Mattey House for 2 nights in the Pinot Noir Room. Jack and Denise are wonderful hosts - very friendly and extremely interesting. We loved hearing their stories - especially those concerning "Never assume someone does not speak your language". We did wine tasting in the Willamette Vally - Denise gave us coupons for tastings and made some recommendations. The second day, we went to Silverville State park - the park of 10 waterfalls - to do some hiking. Denise packed a couple of her delicious scones for us to take with us. We really enjoyed them as a mid-hike snack. This park is definitely worth the visit. Jack sent us to Thistle restaurant in McMinnville the second night. Thistle is a little different with some exotic choices on the menu - but we did enjoy it. We got to watch Jack and his workers picking the grapes from their vineyard. It's quite the process. The Mattey house is definitely worth the stay. The location is near many wineries, close to dining in Dundee and McMinnville, yet in a quiet country setting.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are nice.

My fiancee and I only spent one night here. Jack and Denise were so friendly and are great hosts. Before we arrived they emailed us a list of great local restaurants and offered to make reservations for us. The full breakfast was amazing and they accommodated my need to eat gluten free! Jack & Denise gave us recommendations for wineries and free tasting tickets. Our room was clean and comfy.

Great hosts made this a special experience. The full breakfasts were excellent. For a B&B, this rates near the top. This was close to a winery we had pre-booked for a tour (Anne Aime). Jack suggested we dine at Bistro Maison, because we asked for a special gourmet restaurant. This restaurant was super and will be rated separately. Mattey House is off the highway so it was quiet. Bathrooms are small with tub and shower hard to maneuver. Queen bed was comfortable. Nice deck to sit on and sip wine. You need a car to go into town. Weather for mid-September was unusually hot and the sky was hazy and smoky from adjacent State forest fires. Would have been more enjoyable if the temperature was in the 70's and not around 90. Rooms have AC and it cools down considerably at night so AC wasn't required.

We stayed for two nights to visit Williamette wineries. Jack & Denise were great hosts! Provided winery tasting & dinner recommendations. Location was perfect between McMinnville & Dundee - able to eat and visit both places. stayed in Riesling room - with claw tub!

Jack & Denise have great stories to share. Denise's scones are definitely something to look forward to in the morning.

My husband and I always wanted to visit the Willamette Valley and explore the area and visit the wineries. We found the Mattey House on Tripadvisor and decided to book our stay at the Bed and Breakfast for 8 nights. The Mattey House is located in the country outside of McMinnville. This location was perfect for us because it is centrally located in the Willamette Valley but located in a quiet country setting. The house is on ten acres and there is a beautiful vineyard on the propery. We were able to explore McMinnville, Carlton, and Dundee as well as the surrounding wine country from this location. The house is a beautiful Victorian run by Jack and Denise. We were in the Chardonnay room which overlooks the vineyard - just lovely. Jack and Denise were wonderful hosts and provided us with excellent directions for day trips to the area. We also enjoyed exploring McMinnville which is a short drive from the B&B into town. Wonderful breakfasts were prepared for us every morning. My husband enjoyed the breakfasts immensely. I am not a big breakfast eater but I enjoyed tasting everything which was delicious. The coast is an easy day drive and so we were able to explore the coastal area as well. On another day, Jack provided us with directions to go to Silverton and the Silver Lake State Park which was a wonderful day trip. The park has beautiful waterfalls and was interesting hiking. There is an air museum near-by which was also very interesting. We enjoyed our adventure to the Willamette Valley very much and we enjoyed our stay at the Mattey house and would recommend it to anyone visiting the Willamette Valley.

Room Tip: We liked the Chardonnay room because it was bright and cheery and overlooked the vineyard. Adjacent...
