“Over priced rooms, inconsistent service”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

Shared bathrooms for 80.00 to 100.00 a night rooms? Ridiculous! I stayed in a very small room with a private bath...I loved the old town urban feeling. But the staff is inconsistent. Front desk girl was awesome. Stayed 2 nights and dined and drank there, roof top bar tenders were arrogant. Servers kind of rude. Breakfast staff great....damned good Bloody Mary. Housekeeping did nothing in our room. Dropped towels on the bed and took the tip... Terrible.

Thank you for your feedback. A good Bloody Mary is certainly a fine thing, and I am pleased to hear that front desk staff was awesome. I have sent you a private message to get some more details on the areas of concern you have mentioned. I have already shared your comments with the team at Hotel Oregon and we will be following up accordingly. We look forward to addressing these issues and making improvements.

This is our second visit and we very much enjoyed it. We are however McMenamins groupies, so we are biased. Our room was very small but that was okay as we were out and about exploring the town, having a beer on the rooftop bar, music downstairs. The town is very cute with many shops, restaurants and wine bars in the heart of wine country. If you prefer high end accommodations this place is probably not for you but if you enjoy historic, funky, artistic....then you will likely be pleased.

The hotel staff is nice but this is not a place to try and get away from it all. The hotel is very old and very basic. You can hear people in other rooms and everything creaks. Bedding and linens are low budget and there are no amenities.

Thank you for your review. You really can not beat this location. It right in the middle of McMinnville's downtown with easy access to excellent shops, tasting rooms and restaurants. Not to mention you are in the middle of wine country! We do offer some basic amenities, including soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, towels and robes for those staying in our rooms with bathrooms down the hall. Hair dryers are available upon request, and the front desk is happy to help with any special requests. The roof top and cellar bar are not to be missed and we offer free live music on certain nights of the week. We hope to see you again soon.

The staff is super-nice, but this is basically a youth hostel in most ways (except the prices and they do give you shampoo and conditioner). It is a great location and people are nice, but I think it is much too expensive for what it is.

We had a perfectly adequate room on the 4th floor (with nice bright windows). And I don't mind sharing the bathroom down the hall that much. But between the dragging of the furniture on the roof deck until 11 at night (on a Monday--I can only guess what it is on a Saturday!) or the drunk guys trying to get in our room when they closed, I really think this is over-priced for what it is. $80 a night for one king-size bed (we did have a dog) is a heck of a lot for sharing bathrooms with loud pub noise in McMinnville . (Last time I stayed in a youth hostel, it was in Dublin, Ireland, and it was half that and had a private room--I expect to pay more in big cities and this was NYC pricing, not small-town Oregon prices.)

I also get the sense that the people that run it haven't stayed there. There's a lot of little things they could do to make the shared bathrooms easier. For example, there could be a place to put the key by the door so that if you wake up at 3am and want to go to the bathroom, you have the key right there. Frankly, I think they shouldn't lock the bathrooms and have a way to leave your door unlocked for a minute so you don't have to deal with keys. They should dim the lights in the hallway and bathrooms at night, so it isn't SO jarring to have to deal with going down the hall in the middle of the night. They might provide slippers, so you don't have to put your shoes on if you don't want to go barefoot in a shared bathroom.

If you do come, ask for the third floor room. The second floor gets spillover from the ground-level pub and the fourth floor gets a ton of noise from the deck. And keep in mind that this a pub first and a hotel second. If you're into the pub part, this may be great for you, but if you're not, you might prefer a location more focused on the guests sleeping and not drinking.

Room Tip: THIRD FLOOR!!!!! Everything else is too noisy.

Pros:
Right in the center of old McMinnville, close to some great restaurants
Wonderful rooftop deck
Building and furnishings have lots of character
Friendly, helpful staff
Property has AC, and unlike in some older buildings, it works well on hot days

Cons:
Rooms are small, and can be noisy
Beds are small (full size mattress in our queen room)
Amenities (bed linens, towels, bathrooms, etc.) are very basic
Pretty expensive, given the nature of the accommodation

rooftop is the major selling point. avoid visiting during the wetter months. you're better off with Kennedy School or Edgefield.

Friendly staff. decent food. good beers. when the the sun is shinning, it's well worth the trip. Try and include wind tasting during your holiday. This spot isn't that close to Portland so you're better off staying 2 nights.

Room Tip: request a room next to the courtyard if you're selecting a shared room.

If your hotel needs include absolute quiet, spacious rooms, and 5 star service this is NOT the place for you. However if you have a sense of adventure and a good sense of humor, a stay at a McMenamins should not be missed while traveling in Oregon. We loved the quirky art, friendly casual atmosphere, and the historical pictures and information that filled the historic building. Rooms are really REALLY small but we dealt with it - we were only in the room to sleep anyway. There is too much in the hotel to explore and its location right in center of town and walking distance to all of the cool shops and restaurants made the room's size irrelevant. Loved hanging out on the rooftop and sitting at the tables outside. Would stay here again.
