“Great surprise!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2011

I had heard about McMenamins hotels before so after seeing there sign on the highway we thought we would give it a shot. The hotel is very affordable, and like all there properties, very unique. Our room was simple but comfortable and we didn't experience any of the noise that has been commented on in other posts. The washrooms were shared, which was weird, but they were very clean and well kept. The pub on the roof has a great view and the beer is pretty good too. Can't beat the location; great restaurants and shops and close to lots of vineyards for exploring.

If you are looking for affordable accommodation and have an open mind give this place a shot, you won't be sorry. If you are looking for a more Holiday Inn experience this isn't the place for you.

To stay here, you MUST have a sense of humor and be flexible. Thank goodness we had stopped at McMenamins Edgefield (which is worth a stop by the way), so we were not so surprised by the unusual appearance of this place. The art work is worth the cost of the stay-be sure you pick up an art guide and follow it around each floor-absolutely fascinating. It will take about 2 hours. The pub on the roof has great beer, wine and food. I had the portabella mushroom sandwich and it was delicious. My son had a fabulous burger and my husband had an excellent salmon salad. The McMinamins Viognier is probably the best I have ever had. Be sure to try their liqueurs, and brandies if you are an after dinner drinker. Now to the rooms-not quite like the web pictures, but ok. The King room was much smaller than I expected and we had to move furniture around to open out the roll away for my son. There is an armoire, no closet and no iron or ironing board. In the bathroom there is no hair dryer(you can get one from the front desk), NO counter space and the hot and cold water come out of separate faucets in the sink. The tub is a claw tub with a curtain to draw completely around it for a shower. It was quiet, the air conditioner provided white noise, so we were not bothered by footsteps clomping up the stairs(no carpet, anywhere), and because we were there on a Monday night, the pub upstairs was not loud. The staff is VERY nice and helpful. My son ate breakfast downstairs the next morning and he said it was very good, but expensive. We went next door to a very nice bakery-people not very nice, but the coffee and pastries, especially the breakfast bread pudding was terrific. By the way, you can park down the street in a parking garage for free. Be aware that if you come to the wine country like we did on a Monday, none of the great restaurants like the Painted Lady are open, but like I said the pub upstairs was very good and who cares anyway after a full day of wine tasting. Anyway, if you can do without the amenities that one is used to and have a sense of humor-please don't miss this unique little offering from the McMenamin's group.

Room Tip: Only the King rooms have private baths

Stayed here 1 night. We had a European style room with a bathroom and shower across the hall which was no problem for us. And it was cheaper.

The best part was there were 3 bars in the hotel. The rooftop is great in the summer. We had a drink in each. But 3rd Street is great for restaurants. We walked up and down the street checking out the shops and finding snacks and drinks.

Parking is on the street or just 3 blocks away they do have a free garage.

When we were planning our trip to Willamette Valley, we struggled to find a good hotel option. There are a couple very expensive options and a handful of bed and breakfasts but not much in a mid-price range. After considering all of our options we chose McMenamins Hotel Oregon because of the price and location. I knew it wouldn't be fancy, but it seemed like it might have some charm.

The good: The location is convenient. It's right next to several of the restaurants identified as the best in the area - Nick's and Thisle, and was a good jumping off point for the region's many wineries. It's also easy to park for free nearby.

There is a certain charm to the old building and the eclectic decor and art. And you can't beat the prices when compared to the fancy resorts like the Allison Inn. The roof deck bar is especially nice with a pretty view of the town and lots of good beers on offer.

The bad: The room was tiny and kind of beat looking. I thought we wouldn't mind the size since we weren't spending much time in there, but it was difficult to even have room for our bags.

We sprung for the room with en-suite bath and we're certainly glad we did, although the bathroom wasn't great. It was not set up well for getting ready with nowhere to put your toiletries in or near the shower and little room by the sink.

The temperature ranged from hot and stuffy to frigid. There didn't seem to be a way to get the air conditioning to run at a sub-arctic temperature.

My husband rarely complains about hotels I pick but he hated this place since it just wasn't very comfortable. I think perhaps a younger (we're in our early 30s) or more budget minded couple might appreciate this hotel more, but for us it wasn't a great fit.

Room Tip: Spring for en-suite bath

LOUD is not quaint ...... if it were not for the location ,I don't know why anyone would stay here. Yes there is a nice view on top of the building and a bar but......it feels like a overpriced youth hostel. The pipes are sooo loud all night long it's amazing , if you like to hear every thing going on all around you then this is the place to stay. The bars are loud as well and carry on very late. The rooms are "basic", tiny poorly lit and very tierd, the beds are small old and uncomfortable. Along with the joy of being aware of every toilet flush on the whole floor (the pipes ran right above our bed inside our room) ) We gort to share a room with some one who took a shower at 3am ????after the bars let out right below and above you......one may experience some drunk bar element like yelling and fighting (untill the cops come) or just singing and smoking and banter...... a little bit of every thing. It seems the rooms are just for crashing out after you hit the bars. front desk may or may not be around.....they are not too concerned about the guests as bar trumps hotel as a priority.. Our room was not clean, our windows had all kinds of "finger goo"smeared all over from the last hotel guest. We were locked out of the bathroom we shared with someone (that was a upgrade ??) just opted to start using the hall bathroom since the sink in our room was not draining pretty gross all around .......in short it feels very much like you are paying to stay in a college frat house or a dorm room that happens to have artistic wall paint. I suspect its all about location for this McMenamins oh after check in we had to park 3 blocks away as there is no parking

This hotel is nothing fancy, but for the money I can't imagine a better stay in a terrific little town. The rooms are small and share a bath; mine was down the hall. But, it is such a good deal and nice place I didn't mind. The location is PERFECT! It's right on the main intersection with several great restaurants nearby. When I go back to the Portland area for fun, I will for sure stay here.

There aren't a lot of hotel optinons in McMinnville, so my wife chose this one based upon Tripadvisor reviews.

The hotel was on "main street". Very few of the rooms have bathrooms, so you have to go down the hall (did I mention there are not a lot of hotels in McMinnville). Furniture and bedding was old and tired. Carpet was old and beat. The bathrooms, although communal, were very clean and efficient. The rooftop and cellar bars were both very cool. In fact, this hotel has like 6 or 7 different bars and 3 or 4 restaurants on the property. (Quite amazing given the fact that it's just one building.) The servers were hit and miss. Some were great, some totally sucked. Street parking was readily available.

Food and drinks were expensive at the hotel. There was a great pizza joint/movie theater (you are reading that right) down the street. Their pie and salads are super tastey.

The location is excellent. It's probably within 10-15 miles of dozens of wineries. At the end of the day, I think this is what the hotel patrons are paying for.
