“wonderful ocean view in the midst of storms!”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

This was a great place to be when it was stormy on my latest visit to Manzanita--warm fireplace, great views, good book & a cup of tea (made in the efficient little kitchen!)--what more could I want?! Thank you for a great place to stay!

Room Tip: Upstairs corner rooms have extra windows for view & more light!

This was an amazing stay for me and my family. It was raining and stormy all weekend. But we had so much fun. Just siting in our room with the door open watching and listening to the ocean. The rooms were clean, nicely sized, and the staff were wonderful. Thank you so much.

Room Tip: Rooms 33 & 32 offer sliding glass doors that allow you to sit with the door wide open and hear t...

This is the best hotel right in the beach. Great value, friendly staff and the room
was fantastic overlooked the ocean. The room had a kitchen, so we were able to make breakfast before going on a beach walk. I would stay there again.

We stayed in the Budd Building in room 105 perfect for pets, walk the dogs right out the sliding glass window to a grassy area and right across the street to the ocean. The views were wonderful and the room was so comfortable, quiet and warm. Perfect place to walk anywhere in Manzanita. We will definately be back.

My husband and I stayed in this motel in October and loved it! Actually, it's the best motel/hotel location not only for Manzanita, but for Cannon Beach and Seaside! The room has a fireplace - so nice for October! We enjoyed the view of the ocean and sunset right from the inside, through the wide glass door. We watched sunset and ocean from sitting on the chairs on the second floor, no private balconies though, but still spacious room to sit and walk.
It's located 5 min to walk to the local grocery's store with even lower prices than IGA, which is within 5 min to drive, 10 min walk. There is also a lovely coffee place - 10 min away "Manzanita News", the service is very slow though, but has a terrace and nice atmosphere.
The service in the motel was odd: next morning the cleaner brought towels and asked which ones we needed to replace.
She also advised that we’d get towels if we ask. After 3 nights I called to ask what I should do with 2 full garbage buckets and was told the cleaner would take of them. When we returned later that day – everything was changed and vacuumed! Strange…

Room Tip: corner room on the upper floor is the best!

We hadn't stayed at the Sunset Surf in a while, and we were very favorably impressed with the upgrades/remodeling. We stayed in Room 202, which is upstairs at the Laneda Avenue end of the Budd Building. It is actually a corner room, and so had windows facing south as well as west (with the sliding glass door on the west, beach-facing side). We enjoyed the private balcony, the incomparable view, and the complete studio apartment-like accommodations, including a full refrigerator and stove/oven, microwave, dishwasher, and coffee maker, as well as the bed, sofa, gas fireplace, and dinette table and chairs.

As it was mid-October and the rains and cooler weather had come, we had no problem with the room being too warm, and we did see that there was an air conditioning unit there, but we could imagine that it might be stuffy in the summer. We left the sliding glass door open a lot of the time, and it would have been nicer to have a screen in there, as it was the only window/door that opened.

We were on the busiest "beach corner" in the whole town, and there was never much traffic. We got to see lots of dogs enjoying the beach, as well as spend time looking out at the expansive views of the beach and ocean. We love coming to Manzanita, although often we will rent a vacation home, but for a two-night stay, this worked out extremely well. We also took advantage of the cable TV (got to watch lots of sports) and the wifi (code was on the phone in the room, so we didn't need to request it).

The motel is now entirely non-smoking, but accommodated outdoor smoking, which seemed a fair compromise for all. Some of the rooms are pet-friendly, so be aware that you may have some very happy beach-going dogs for neighbors!

This is kind of a classic beach motel, so don't expect indoor hallways, upscale hotel amenities, etc. The outdoor steps are pretty exposed and get kind of wet, but that is all part of the Oregon beach experience, and to be expected.

If you're looking for a lot of privacy, this room might not offer it, in that you are right there overlooking the street and beach, and unless you draw the (nice and darkening) drapes, you might feel that you're in a bit of a fishbowl. But it's not too bad on the second floor, and it's pretty much unavoidable in a beachfront location. Many of the upscale houses also give you a fishbowl sense as well.

Room Tip: The second floor of the Budd Building gives you a nice beach view, over Ocean St., as well as privat...

A repeat visit for us, and just as good as before. An older motel, yet with immaculately clean and comfortable rooms, and the best location in Manzanita. You get to be immersed in the joy of being seaside, even in your room, with the sound, sight, and smell of the ocean all around you. A real treat..
We had a family suite, with a complete and suitably equipped kitchen that included all dishes and utensils, gas fireplace, and pleasing (but sparse) decor. The dining table had four chairs that were oddly very low, so you felt like a child at the table when you sat and ate. The bathroom was spotless, the towels delightfully plush and soft, and the showerhead a real joy to use. Curiously, there was no property guide to let you know what was available or where things were, and there was no TV guide to help deal with the complicated number and placement of channels that were all over the spectrum.
As there are several buildings in the complex, you need to walk to get ice or to the office from our location. Desk clerks were very friendly and helpful, there are lots of board games you can borrow, dvd's to rent, and an outdoor pool.
The room rates are surprisingly reasonable for this location and level of amenities. I will absolutely return and would recommend this motel to anyone.

Room Tip: Get a top floor room. You hear every footfall and cough if you are below.
