Description: New restaurant in little Madras serving fresh, gourmet Mexican and tantalizing margaritas. The food is unusual, beautifully presented and the owner is a gem. Cost is very reasonable. Meals are quite large (enough for 2).

“Pleasant surprise”
Reviewed May 17, 2013

The earlier reviews are right -- a diamond in the desert. Seating was open and casual. The service was very good -- prompt and attentive without fawning. The wine list is basic, so if wines are your thing you might want to bring your own. But the food! Wonderful! We started with an unusual fondue that was simply outstanding, and then moved to a tortilla soup with shredded chicken that was very good, perhaps paling only when compared to the fondue. The entree was one of the house favorites, deservedly so -- a trio of chicken, prawns and steak in a mole' sauce. The mole' was complex, and yet nicely balanced. It went with all three -- prawns, chicken, and beef.

Strongly recommended restaurant, and we will definitely return -- hopefully soon!

“A nice find!”
Reviewed May 4, 2013

So my wife and I were spending the weekend at Kahneeta and I desperately wanted to eat somewhere else and I found a review from another person who found Rio in Madras also trying to bust out of Kahneeta. So 30 miles later, we found a full restaurant at 6 on a Saturday night. OK onto the food. The salsa was smoky flavored and with some hotness. Chips were fresh and salty. The guacamole made at the table included mango and was delicious. My entree (Cazuela) was unique - with steak, chicken and shrimp - and I really liked the chipotle cream sauce that came with it. My wife is vegetarian and they worked with her to make her taco salad more appetizing. She loved the wine (rare in a Mexican restaurant) but my margarita seemed to be short on tequila. Overall, we left happy, full and satisfied.

“NOT your Usual or Average Mexi Food”
Reviewed April 20, 2013

These people can cook! I had the pork stuffed chili rellano and it is SUPURB! Everyone was more then pleased with their meal. So much so that we went back a second night. The presentation of their food is like none other and the favors match it! We had Cadillac Margaritas that were equally as wonderful! Guacamole is fixed table side with all fresh ingrients and was fabulous as well. Service was a bit slow with only one waiter who is also the owner. Well worth the wait.

“An Oasis in the Desert”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

Like so many we travel through Madras very often. But we seldom stop for more than gas, and coffee. This time we stayed for lunch. By happenstance I had seen a restaurant that I had never seen before, El Rio. We had a great experience. The food was delicious, the service was 5 stars, and we left feeling great.

“Best Mexican Food North of Tucson”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

We traveled from Tucson to San Diego then north along the coast, heading inland north of San Francisco. Noticed the reviews of this little restaurant when we were in Bend, OR, so kept going before we stopped for lunch. Good decision - food was exceptionally clean, not the "fast food" approach which seems to have become common. Subtle spicing, beautifully tender roasted pork - food was the equal of El Charro in Tucson. This is a small place with personal service - we had no problem establishing that there was no wheat flour in the sauces.
