Stopped in for lunch on a Sunday and the place was packed, despite that the service was terrific. My asian salad was HUGE and hubby had a great breakfast as well. Waffle was cute with a bear paw in the middle of it :)

Thought we would give Black Bear in Madras a try for dinner........mistake! Ordered the fried chicken which the menu described as crunchy on the outside and juicy inside. More coming about that claim. Ordered the soup over salad option which was vegetable barley, made in the restaurant. It was absolutely tasteless, but the waitress gladly replaced it with the tossed salad. She said I don't really like the spice he uses in the soup. I found that to be ironic because I couldn't taste any spice. It tasted like water. Received the chicken dinner. The dark pieces were passable, but the chicken breast was absolutely dry as a bone. Reminded me of the scene from "Christmas Vacation" when Clark cut open the overdone turkey and the whole turkey collapsed. I didn't send it back since I had already sent the soup back. Mashed potatoes with about a large tablespoon of gravy was passable. Wish there had been more gravy. Don't understand why the cook in this large chain doesn't know Chicken 101, that breasts don't need near as much time as dark pieces of chicken when cooking. It should be basic unless of course he didn't care. Service was fine although had to ask for water refill instead of it being offered when it wasn't that busy. Probably won't return. Can't understand how this large chain continues to thrive.

Black Bear is a staple in Madras. It is located on the main street and includes plenty of parking even for a camper. The food is always exceptional and the service is friendly and efficient. It is a family owned and operated business. You will even see the children help to seat the guest. The food is old fashion and prepared to perfection. The restaurant is decorated with wood carved bears. Cute and sweet! The dining room is always clean and pleasant. A great place to stop and eat while traveling through Madras.

Was a busy weekend morning, the place was packed. We were seated promptly. Our server was at out table immediately to get us our coffee. The server was so good, we had to tell him we needed more time to review the menu, twice!! Good portions and excellent service!! Highly recommend this place!!
