We spent four days over the Thanksgiving holiday at the Surftides. Last year, 2011, we enjoyed a very delicious Thanksgiving meal. Predicated on this good experience and meal, we invited our family to enjoy a few days at the beach with the expectation that the Thanksgiving dinner would be enjoyed by all. Unfortunately, we were very mistaken. We could have gone to any of the many grocery outlets selling prepared Thanksgiving meals and enjoyed it more and probably for a lot less expense. The pies were served in tins as if they had just been purchased at a grocery store and put in the oven. The turkey was very dry with a thin gravy that was tasteless. The salad bowls were mostly empty and we had to ask for them to be refilled. The pan for the smoked oyster cornbread stuffing was empty and never refilled. The Waldorf Salad was a bagged grocery store salad mix with a few grapes. The sliced bread was very dry and not worthy of a special Thanksgiving dinner. Nothing in this year's Thanksgiving buffet special was special except the $100+ bill. The front desk hostess was mostly in the bar area watching the football game and cheerleading her team on instead of catering to the needs of the arriving customers. While waiting to be seated, we read an article on their bulletin board about how the new chef had just placed first in the Oyster Cloyster Festival. We left in wonderment as to his involvement allowing this subpar Thanksgiving dinner to be served to his customers.
To the restaurant's credit, our server was very attentive although no manager was observed overseeing the dinner or interacting with the guests.
Upon checkout at the hotel desk we were asked how we enjoyed our stay. I mentioned our room had a distinct odor to it (as well as did the rest of our family's rooms - since they allow pets perhaps this was the cause?). I stated how we had been very disappointed in the Thanksgiving dinner, which had been the primary reason why we return from the previous year. We expected some kind of follow up but to date haven't had any.
