“Climb to spectacular views”
Reviewed August 22, 2011

Taking the tramway is a bit on the pricey side but ultimately worth every penny. The ride itself climbs approximately 4000 feet but even those leary of heights cannot stop themselves from peering out in wonder. Once at the top several nature trails are available. The trails are marked with easy to read information about the flora and animals located there. The grand finale however is the spectacular panorama of the mountains - chief joseph, little Matterhorn are just two that make up the eagle crest range. After taking glorious pictures you can have a bite to eat at the cafe on top of the mountain. It's all well worth t

“The view is amazing”
Reviewed August 21, 2011

This is really one of the highlights of any vist to the Wallowa Lake area. The tram takes you to the top of Mt. Howard in about 15 minutes. The tram cars are pretty small, only hold about 4 people at once so we needed to use two tram cars to get our family to the top. You can stay as long as you want on the top and there are some good hiking areas -- be sure and bring your camera, you will kick yourself if you don't. One tip, we ended up eating at the Cafe at the top -- it is a very long wait, they only serve about 8 tables at a time (even though there are more open tables) because they are, apparently, always short staffed. We were at the front of the line for 45 minutes before being allowed to sit down, then had to wait another 45 minutes for our food. What you should consider doing is bringing up some light snacks (or a picnic) with you to the top. We saw several families doing that and thought that if we ever come back, that would be a good idea. Better yet, go into Joseph and have lunch there. Another thing about the tram, at the ticket window we were told that our ticket was good for as many rides as you wanted to take during the day you purchased it -- when we got into the tram car we were told it was a one time, round trip ticket. At $26 per person it can get expensive so plan out when you go and allow yourself enough time at top to enjoy it.

“A must see attraction”
Reviewed August 20, 2011

The view from the top of the tramway is worth the cost. The hiking trails at the top are well maintained and not too physically challenging. Much information is available about the flora and fauna to be seen as well as the mountain vistas.

“Beautiful View!”
Reviewed August 15, 2011

If you have never been up the tram it is something that you should definitely experience. It is a bit spendy but the view is absolutely breathtaking. Be prepared because it is about a 15 minute ride up the mountain and during the summer it can be a little hot & stuffy in the tram. Do not bother eating at the cafe on top...it is over priced and not very good. Take your camera and wear comfortable shoes!

“Long wait but worth it in the end”
Reviewed August 5, 2011

Arriving just before opening at 10AM was not a good idea. Long wait for tickets and to get on the tram. Tram operators allowed just 1 or two people to go up on the 4 person gondolas which extended the wait. They should require 3-4 people per gondola when there is a long line. Once we finally made it up to the top, the views were wonderful and the trails were well maintained. Be aware of biting black flies. Despite the wait, this was the best part of our visit to Joseph.
