Not the biggest lake in the Northwest but definnitely one of the prettiest. The state park has a well-maintained campground with hook-ups,fire pits and tables under the pines. There is also a day use area with several overlooks, beach access, and a small visitor center. For the anglers, there is a fish cleaning station as well. The city park on the north end also has nice beach access. Check out the Chief Joseph Gravesite and the historic lodge as you drive around the lake,

We wandered into this park many years ago on a motorcycle. Hot water showers were unknown in our parks. The glacial till/green colored lake is amazing and the mountains-if you were expecting the dry lands of much of E. Oregon these Swiss style peaks will amaze.

Enterprise and Joseph are fun little towns. You can imagine why Chief Joseph and tribe were so pissed when they got pushed out of this beautiful area. It just makes you try to think of a way to live here, move here.

If you are looking for the ultimate family rustic get away you could not do better than Wallowa Lake and the Wallowa National Forest in Southeastern Oregon. The is just about any kind of recreation that an outdoor enthusiastic could want at this paradise. First of all it is at the end of the road so there is only on way in and one way out. We let our kids ride their bikes all over the park. When motor home camping the camp spots are well groomed and maintained with asphalt aprons, pic-nic tables and fire pits. Deer and Elk roam freely about the park and have been known to bed down right next to your tent or motor home. The state of Oregon keeps the lake well stocked with trout and there are lots of hold overs from previous years that of very good size, plus there is excellent stream fishing in the area. There are cabins for rent and there is a lodge with rooms and excellent dining. Miles of trails and a tram that you can ride deep into the Wallowa National Forest. This is an excellent location for couples, families and friends to meet and have a great experience that will last their whole lives

An Idaho friend suggested this park as a "half way point" between them, in Sun Valley, and us, in Seattle. What a great choice. Granted we visited in October when the nights were cold and the crowds were down. The park sits at the south end of Lake Wallowa, surrounded by spectacular scenery. It is well maintained with large RV pads and clean, modern restroom/shower facilities. The lake would be an attraction in the summer but for us, in the fall, it was just a great view. Several hiking trails head into the high country from the area so you can get exercise or just sit and enjoy the view. We were both in small travel trailers, tucked among the larger RV cousins.

Keep your dogs on six foot leashes (or extend-a-leashes that retract quickly - the deer are not afraid in the least, and easy to come up upon unexpectedly snoozing or eating.
