“Nice but like most campgrounds, crowded. Excellent for families.”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Okay, we are an older couple and we have been tent camping for 30 years or so... And we like children so that is not the issue. A few late arrivals at two in the morning, don't know how or why they allow that will definitely wake you up... that was no fun.
Like most campgrounds that have one tenting-only circle, there is very little privacy. As if in an area of many acres they can't figure that one out. So viewing nature is getting to watch your neighbors create big smoky campfires. But we like the folks in our tenting circle and met some other couples without kids.
The climbing trails nearby are not for children and are challenging (I took a wicked tumble on the Ice Lake trail) but they will take you up into the high alpine meadows. Reminded us a little of Glacier without the Grizzlies. Very pretty and can be challengng. We were there the third week in August so most of the wild flowers had just gone but still it does feel a little like the Alps. A little...
The campground is definitely set up for kids, big time, but watch them because also lots of traffic and lots of RV's. Still it is like one big playground there so looks good for families.
Joseph is a cool town that closes early each night but the food is good and modestly priced. The grocery store on Main Street was also reasonably priced and had some good fruit sale specials. We could have stocked up on most things right there and if we go back next year will probably hold off on some of that shopping until we get into town. Depends on what you like I suppose; we always do supper out...

“Beautiful Area. Hard to Access Lake.”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Multiple people had told me Wallowa Lake was a must see area. It was in fact beautiful. Lots of hiking trails and the campground was incredibly well thought out - no site was far from water or restrooms. The campground was crowded. If you want privacy, it looked like the C-loop was the best as it backed up against a mountain. The most disappointing part was the lake. If you did not have a ski boat, it was very difficult to use. The lake access was either disgustingly muddy or you had to traverse down steep boulders. There was no place to just sit and relax comfortably around the lake. We even canoed around the lake and couldn't find a good spot to relax and go swimming. My friend had a 5- and 2- year old and it was almost impossible to get them into the lake easily. There are some public docs, but they're hard to get to if you don't have a ski boat. While we loved the area and enjoyed our trip, we'll be looking for a more accessible lake for future trips.

“Perfect get away”
Reviewed August 27, 2013

We were here the end of August, a great time as school has started and there are less people. Good showers and fantastic views. The wood is pricey, so pick some up on the way into town if you can. There are small restaurants within walking, and the lake is right there too; you can rent a variety of boats too.

“Great place to visit! This isn't the place for privacy.”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

The lake is beautiful and has a large beachfront. Lots of hiking areas. The facilities are nice and clean. the only problem is that the campsites are packed on top of each other. It was sold out in August. I would recommend getting you summer reservations a year early and picking a site on the outside edge.

It is a beautiful lake. The fishing is good. Rent a boat and have fun traveling around the lake. We hired a guide and the guys caught several fish. He told them about the area. They really enjoyed it.
