We couldn't believe how much space we had in the room. Everything looked and worked like brand new - refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, tv, wireless. The bed was very comfortable, although no blanket was provided and I hate comforters. We had just spent 4 nights in a very cramped motel room in Baker City, so it was worth the price to just enjoy hanging out in pure comfort and within walking distance of Kam Wah Chung museum and main street restaurants. We also walked the path along the John Day River - very pleasant stay. The staff are not the best and warmest, but we like to travel somewhat anonymously, so that was fine with us.

Weary from driving all day and having enjoyed our Best Western experience at Reedsport the previous night, we drove in to this one. Big mistake! No one came to the desk for awhile, and when I asked for a room I was told "We're full--the whole town is booked up!" Now this place is a long way from other motel towns(in both directions) and I about cried because the next motel town was at least an hour away and it was already 8:00 PM! She said nothing at all, no I'm sorry, nothing. As we drove out of the lot and turned the corner, there were two motels with vacancy! When we told the lady at the one around the corner about Miss Annoyed saying the town was booked she said that she told people that the night before. What a _____! Is there a filing job for her, away from contact with the public? Sad...

This is one of the worst Best Western's I've stayed at. The staff are less than friendly and this motel appears like a run down motel renovated with the Best Western label slapped on. I based my stay on all the rave reviews from Tripadvisor. The pool was not working, the internet was so horrible to be unuseable. This motel really does some serious price gouging because you are in the middle of nowhere and trust the Best Western name.
I am giving this one advise: stay in Prairie City if you can. It's a charming little town 15 minutes further east. I wish someone told me about it before it stayed in this town. Look up Historic Hotel Prairie.

GRAB YOUR CAMERA! If you have never stayed in John Day, Oregon *BOY* are you in for a treat! The town is absolutely charming. We went to so many Antique stores that were absolutley brimming with circa Miner 49'r relicts and artifacts. (We also love the miner history of GRASS VALLEY & NEVADA CITY, CA - but JOHN DAY BEATS THE PANTS OFF - HANDS DOWN!) We took in the Natural History Musuem in Canton City, The Chinese Musuem, The Painted Hills, The John Day House & Dinosaur area - and were thrilled!!! We travelled however during the worst heat wave of the year, that week and bunkered in if you will at the Best Western John Day. We almost exclusively stay with Best Westerns as we travel with our dog and the chain is always clean, hospitable, comfortable and has a pool. This place is without exception. When our travel partners parted ways with us the second day -electing to go home due to the heat, we just stayed on at the Best Western and were even upgraded to a two room suite at no additional $$. HELLO?!!!

The John Day is a unique Best Western for the comraderie that is formed due to the way the 2nd floor balconey and open parking situations meet - which provides a relaxed, yet 'semi party' atmosphere. Yes, you can have traffic morning sounds but so what? - if it is bothersome, or you already know that this would not be welcoming at 7am - ask the staff for a room off the front parking area. The staff is very friendly & accommodating if they can, they will provide every reasonable comfort. Be aware, we stayed two days and they were booked out by 9am! If you want to seriously play, take a photo safari , and walk through Oregon's History - THIS IS THE PLACE TO STAY!!!! We highly reccommend!

it was quieter behind the poolhouse as the main hwy goes thru town and trucks rumble thru, close to an old historic church with lovely roof and windows, the breakfast was better than most"continental" sorts

Traveling thru to Baker City, and needed to stop in John Day, stopped at the Best Western.
Michelle at the front desk took care of my softball team and was just amazing! Thank you so much for your assistance, and we will make sure to always stay here when we travel over to the area.
Thank you Michelle & Best Western.

John Day is a small town but seemed to us the best option as a base for a 1 night stopover visiting the fossil beds etc. The Best Western is conveniently located in the centre of it. All available eateries are within easy walking distance but don't expect a wild night!

Everything you need/expect from a motel. Unfortunately the pool was unavailable at the time of our stay due to a mishap the previous week with the chemical cleaning of it. Other than that we were happy with the provisions for breakfast and the room in general was well equipped.

We were disappointed with the Fossil Beds but the Painted Hills were worth the trip.
