We hiked in the John Day Fossil Beds area during when we had a vacation day during the Canyon Creek Wildfire. We loved the view and the majesty of creation. It's a great place to sit, reflect, and relax. An excellent place to escape your cell phone (most people won't have service).

The interpretive center is top notch. Someone took their time and talent to create interesting and informative displays. While we were there, school kids, elders and young adults mingled among the exhibits, film and hands on displays. It was fun and we left much better informed about the area. A pleasant surprise and worthwhile destination. Take time to walk around on the trails. Painted hills are not immense but a jewel.

Fossils from 40 million years ago. Landscape is varied and unusually beautiful. Sites are well labeled and well maintained. We spent four days driving a circuit from Redmond to Fossil to Mitchell and back to Bend. Accommodations are basic, and that's part of the fun.

We were very impressed by the Painted Hills. The signage was very clear and informative and there were many pull offs to allow for picture taking. The colors are amazing!

The National Monument spans quite a large area. There is a paleontology museum which is very interesting. Make sure to catch the introductory movie. Who knew there was a "fossil rush" after the gold rush in Oregon?
