If you look at the price of the ticket and the experience of the train ride well it should cost less, the hot chocolate is cold, but if your in the upper dome which is worth the extra money you get a really cute souvenir hot chocolate mug we got 4 of the them and love them, the view was also very nice even though it was getting dark, we were also at the back top of the upper dome so we had our own private area which was lovely for the 5 adults that were with us,The cookie is a basic molasses cookie which isn't very good, but what did you expect. The ride itself was interesting they read the book well actually you just listen to it on speakers, and some teenage elf's walk around with attitudes cause you can tell they have done this a million times and there are better places for them to be. Santa is nothing special to us since we are the adults but for my daughter who was 2 at the time loved every moment and that it what made it so special, to see her eyes light up when we boarded the train and and to be able to see Santa and drink her cold hot chocolate made the whole trip a great experience for us we loved it we could dwell on all the negatives about it but it was a adventure that me and my whole family enjoyed and we plan to do it again just because its about the kids not us.

This is great for visitors, it gives you a break from the heat and lets you experience the gorgeous Hood River orchards and farms, with a quick stop in Odell you can purchase some really delicious cookies, hop back on and see some great views of Mt Adams and Mt Hood. The 2 hour tour I went on gave a history of the area and we chose to sit in the air conditioned car, which I thought was worth it. It would be really fun to do the western adventure or other themed rides.

Today after many years of talking about it took the Mt Hood RR trip to Parkdale. We took the coach at $15, but in hindsight the dome car may have been better choice at $45. Sure better views of Mt Hood.

We were lucky nice warm sunny day, this evening a few drops of rain in Hood River. We head home tomorrow. wife got a two night deal at Vagabond Lodge.

One small problem. you have to pay for parking. You park, walk 100 yards and more to station where you pick up train tickets, we had already paid, but there you pay for parking and walked clear back 100 plus yards to car to put in dash. And line stalled when we were second for some reason. Train was late starting because of long line. we got there soon after 9AM for 10AM ride. They need to improve that process

First I'll start with the good. Okay now that part is done with. We arrrived at the station in Hood River to find that they also charge $4.00 for parking. I went to use the restroom in the station (9:00 a.m.) and found out they must not have any janitorial service. There were 8 adults in our party and we took the 4 hour excursion. For some reason the Gilligans island "Three hour tour" song keeps rerunning in my brain. Our assigned seating was in the dome dining area. If you are 6' tall good luck being comfortable. The conductor said the car was built in 1954. That's probably when it was last thoroughly cleaned. We took off from the station and quite possibly achieved a top speed of 22.5 miles an hour. Couple this with the constant rocking of the car and those of you who get motion sickness might want to take something before leaving. After what seemed like forever we ended up in Parkdale for 45 minutes. Others in our party had lunch at the BBQ place. $8.00 and lukewarm. We boarded the train for our return trip to find that the coach had filled with noxious odors from the onboard septic system. When we finally reached Hood River and the end of our excursion we rushed to get off and never looked back. Save your money for something else!!!!

Thank you for taking the time to comment about your trip aboard the Mt. Hood Railroad. I'm sorry you did not enjoy the trip. We will do our best to improve our janitorial skills as you have pointed out did not meet your criteria. The train ride is designed to go slow so that the customer can relax, take in the breathtaking views and enjoy each other's company. One might even find the historical facts in the narration interesting as well as the era of the cars. Again, I'm sorry you did not have a good time on our train.

Take care,
Meagan

The excursion was definitely worth the $15/p coach fare, making it one of the best values for a 4 hour long tourist train in the United States. The views of river, forest, orchards and Mt. Hood were great. We had seats in the coach car that had a snack bar and wooden chairs and tables (highly recommended over the other coach seating). Access to the vestibule for photos was superior to the dome seats (no window reflection/glare). The stop at the fruit museum was fun, but is really a tourist stop to sell fruit. The museum at Parkdale (free with train ticket) was interesting and there are picnic tables if you bring lunch. Pick a clear day or Mt. Hood will not be visible. Combine with a stop at Multnoma Falls if coming from the Portland area.
