Owner description: Franco Marchesi's passion for wine began in his hometown of Borgosesia, Peimonte, Italy. As a child he always wondered what it would be like to be a winemaker like his grandfather Achille. After running his own import company specializing in Italian wines for over 20 years, Franco began planting his favorite Northern Italian grapes in Hood River, where the climate and soil are just like Northern Italy. Please come visit, and taste our wines. Salute!

We've enjoyed visits to Marchesi a couple times before, so maybe we should have known better than to show up there on a beautiful, sunny, late summer day. The combination of artfully made italian-styled wines, paired with a generous board of bread, salami, and cheese, all served by friendly, knowledgeable host(esse)s at tables scattered around the patio outside a small, charming tasting room....vineyards just a few feet away.... Having lived near Oregon wine country since before I was old enough to enjoy it, I can't recall a tasting experience quite like Marchesi's, either here or in California. The reason for the "we should have known better"? We ended up buying a case of wine, and yet another wine club membership. ;-)

Best $5 you can spend in Hood River!

Head out to Marchesi's and order the flight of wines. You get 5 to 6 generous wine samples, and a bread, meat, and cheese tray.

The location is wonderful . . . a large outdoor patio, surrounded by the grape vines on one side, and barns on the other, it is just a perfect place to sit back and relax.

The wine is very good. We ordered a few bottles to be sent directly home, vs. having to worry about packing them for the airplane.

We chose this winery based on info. that the owner is a native of the Piedmonte area of Italy- an area we have traveled several times. One of our favorite wines of the area is Barbera grape. The Marchesi Barbera and a hybrid called "Bric" are both excellent! It is worth driving there from Portland let alone if you are lucky enough to be in the Hood River Area. The hostesses both were very cordial and readily poured and provided light matching antipasti. I think it was $5 a person which is the best bargain around. Definitely a "do over" if the opportunity ever arises.

Tasted a flight of six wines for $5. They also included meat, cheese and bread. What other wineries offer this for so little. The staff was super friendly, they are mostly family, and they will share the history of the vineyard with you. just a few miles out of town with great views. They are lots of wineries in the area, however, you'll be disappointed if you miss this one.

On my day of wine tasting in Hood River, Marchesi was the standout favorite with a gorgeous back drop, well-kept vineyard, and superb wine. They also have wonderful staff who are friendly and knowledgeable. For $5 you get 5-6 generous tastes of their wine plus a large meat and cheese tray - compared to Marchesi, most of the other wineries are skimpy in their offerings. I suggest sitting on their patio for the tasting to enjoy the view, but make sure you also go inside and ask for a taste of their olive oil.
