We had the pleasure of visiting the Columbia Gorge Hotel for the first time last weekend for a wedding. Had heard of this historic hotels recent struggles and read horrible reviews here, so we were pleasantly surprised with our experience!! Gorgeous venue for a wedding. Views are spectacular.Enjoyed the quaint authenticity of our room. But most of all was the excellent service. From the wait staff attending the wedding banquet to their operations manager,Rick Pauly. We spent time talking with and watching Rick tend a very busy bar, address a number of issues concerning other areas of the hotel, all the while smiling and joking with all of us. We plan to make a few return visits this year after Rick told us about the their plans for a piano player in the bar. What a great place to spend the day, or even the whole weekend!!

We visited the Columbia Gorge Hotel on our visit to Hood River. We were a bit concerned as the reviews we had read seemed to be mixed. As it turns out, we were well pleased. The property is lovely - set right on the banks of the Columbia River with beautiful views. We had read that there was traffic noise, but our river view room was quiet and peaceful. As to traffic noise, the freeway follows the gorge and all of Hood River is developed along the gorge. Traffic noise is inevitable anywhere. This hotel has turn-of-the century (the 20th) charm. The rooms are updated and clean and the charm has been retained. If you stay here, expect to be in an old-style hotel. It has not been renovated to look like every other hotel. Each morning, we could open our blinds and gaze at the gorge from bed.
We ate breakfast in the hotel in a a dining room overlooking the gorge. The setting could not have been more impressive. The food was wonderful, especially the berry pancakes. The waiters were attentive and friendly. All together, we felt like we were fortunate to stay at the nicest place in Hood River. If we return to the area, we'll stay here again.

This was our second trip to the hotel. The reason why we chose to vacation here again was due to the wonderful service we received nine months earlier. This time around, was torture. We were in a corner fireplace suite, which was $289 per night, for three nights. The room had been rearranged and painted white, with the bathroom floor being newly tiled, but no other upgrades had been completed. The shelf above the sink was slanted and due to that, my Chanel perfume fell into the sink and broke. The service was absoutley dreadful with anyone who had previously worked there being let go and replaced with teenagers who were awkard and rude. The cleaning staff thought that they would take their smoke breaks in the staff stairwell which went right into our room. We also were surprised to leave our room one morning to three maids sitting on the floor in the hallway gossiping and without a care in the world. Needless to say we didn't have our roomed cleaned the entire trip due to fear of things going missing. The screens in our room had many holes and tears (even missing one in the bathroom) and due to that we came back from dinner one evening to find our room infested with bugs. The service wasn't the only thing that changed for the worse. The restaurant was garbage. The previous chef who was creative with flavors and choices of meat was no longer there. Big mistake! I had to send my dish back because is was overcooked. The wine list is a joke and they charge their guests corkage fees, which is absurd. They also no longer have the very popular $5 happy hour burger. Another mistake made by management. Upon our departure we were visably struggling to carry all of our luggage down the stairs and out the front door while the desk staff sat there dazed and dumbfounded to even offer to open the door. I expressed my concerns during checkout and was assured the new manager (who is from India and VERY CHEAP) would call me. It has been three weeks and I am still waiting.

Don't let the beautiful grounds fool you! We will not be staying here again and would advise anyone traveling to Hood River to stay at the Hood River Inn and save yourself some money as well as any encounters with the staff at this venue.

Drop dead gorgeous place indoors/out for a destination wedding with in-house catering & friendly staff. Hotel sits on the edge of a cliff with a 200+ ft. natural waterfall overlooking the Columbia River. Rooms are small (hotel built in 1921) but recently refurbished; beautiful period furniture/architecture throughout. First rate hiking/kayaking/windsurfing/skiing nearby. Perfect for those seeking a scenic yet intimate wedding location or romantic getaway. Check out the manually-operated elevator! Liked least: single-pane windows allow nearby freeway noise to intrude if your room isn't facing the river. Liked most: romantic setting, Kim the sales/catering lady, gourmet food.

This is a wonderful, historic building in an amazing location - the views from the dining room are breathtaking and the gardens are beautiful. The hotel itself, however, is very dated. The decor is horrible - people, paint the walls and ceilings white and adorn the walls with tasteful, old photographs of the area and hotel! What's up with the brocade wallpaper and ugly, ornate oil paintings? The rooms have extra large closets which are useless because there are no shelves and only 4 hangers provided! The bathroom has NO space for toiletries as there is a pedestal sink with one tiny glass shelf that tilts forward so your stuff falls into the sink regularly! We stayed here with a group who all had the same observations - many rooms had no dressers so they had to pile their clothes on the floor!
Some simple fixes: Paint, dressers, shelves hangers, and this place would be great! I still believe it's the best hotel in the area, just needs a little TLC.

Travel Light,
We have just reopened this great old hotel after being closed for a year. All of your ideas have already been put into place; we have ordered black marble vanities, new beding and window treatments, all to be instaled this fall. The public areas will be refreshed next spring. The last owenership went bankrupt and with a 90yr. old building you can only imagine the work and money it took just to get it open. I hope to see you next summer after we restore the grandger to this historic building.

The entire staff was excellent but especially Donna who manned the front desk, gave us multiple tips on Hood River restaurants, directions to places we set out to see, etc. She is one of the best concierge's we've had anywhere and we've been a lot of places over the years.

Thanks for bringing back to life this magestic, historic property, too.

Stayed here one night. Room was quieter than we thought it would be for such an old hotel. Service was excellent - we called for ice twice and they delivered it to the room within minutes. Bathroom shower had good pressure. Only a pedestal sink so nowhere to put your toiletries. Bed was comfortable. Room overlooked the river - it was fun watching the windsurfers. Elevator is old - an employee must take you up on it - it's one of those where it may not stop evenly with the floor - just adds to the charm of the place. Free wifi was good. Overall a nice place to stay.
