What a great hotel with HISTORY! Kristian the bartender is amazing and makes both great COCKTAILS (try her hot drink: MExican French Toast) and MOCKTAILS (the huckleberry was my fave). The hotel is very old, but located LITERALLY right next to Multnomah Falls. Great rooms, although the beds were a little on the softer side to my liking. Oh, and I forgot to mention the food at the Bar Valentino. Everything is great on the menu, you simply cannot go wrong. In the morning, you wake up to the Waterfall and the river, what else can you ask for?

Room tip: All rooms look to be good

We spent NY Eve at the Columbia Gorge Hotel. Our room was on the corner overlooking the garden and side views of the river. The room was spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed the Sunday brunch with the delicious baked goods and tender prime rib sandwiches. We will be back!

Room tip: NW Corner price of garden but also have side views of river.

Nearly empty on a windy January weekday, this grand old lady is still a gem to behold. Perched on rock cliffs with lovely stone walls and well-tended grounds, this 1920s hotel is jaw-dropping. There's a 200' drop waterfall just feet from the building. Great views of the Columbia River, and close to Hood River. The friendly receptionist gave us a top-floor river view corner room with a fireplace, for the same rate.
Re dinner: staff was friendly and almost too attentive. Ambience is good, though the piped music (e.g."Ben," by Michael Jackson, was played in elevator music style-yuck) should be changed to something genuine. My boar chops were bland enough they would benefit from a spicy sauce such as romesco, and there was too much breading. Most Portland chefs would say the brussels and broccolini were way overcooked. My spouse liked her steelhead.
The setting is great. The dinner prices are pretty reasonable.
I'd give the hotel 4.5 stars, and the restaurant (for dinner) 2.5/5, though prices and service are good.
Really enjoyed this fine hotel!

Thank you for your generous rating and your encouraging comments.
The level of "dente" of the sprouts and broccolini may have been my doing originating from Belgium - a soft bite is fine; half raw as the Portland chefs prefer it, no.However, this is a taste and a preference, I think.
We will be looking into the boar recipe; it should be interesting with good flavors - boar should never be bland, I agree.
The music unfortunately is an issue we are struggling with and are looking fr a more pleasant solution - a work in progress.
Thank you again for your patronage. Maybe we see you again soon.

First the good: The hotel grounds is lovely and the Christmas holiday decor was festive and romantic. We got upgraded to a river view room (from a garden room) due to a cancellation and that was really nice. Charming old style hotel with a staff only operated elevator. Most comfortable bed, softest pillow and sheets ever! Everything seemed clean. Piano man that played in the lounge was excellent, fun and personable! The food in the dinning room delicious and the waitstaff seemed very professional. Additionally the hotel staff was pleasant and friendly.

The bad: Although the hotel staff was very friendly, they weren't knowledgeable about anything that was happening in the area. We are huge travelers and I was expecting someone like a concierge who would have recommendations on where to go to see certain things, highlights in the area, tips on what to do. Someone knowledgeable enough to answer our questions and point us in the right direction. There was no such person there. Disappointed since this hotel passes itself off as a high end establishment. For the rooms, only major complaint is the most accessible electrical sockets in the room where we tried to charge our devices was dangerously loose. Not sure if this was an actual hazard or if it was just an inconvenience. Also, like other reviewers have reported, anytime there is an event, be prepared to park in the farther lots away from the hotel. That also happened to us. Dinning room closed at 9pm which was a little early for our tastes.

And one final random thought. The hotel sits on a cliff right next to a beautiful waterfall. The lovely stream that you see meandering through the front hotel grounds actually feeds directly into this falls (as we later discovered). No guard rails or little fences to block anyone or anything from falling in. Not sure if that matters as long as people are cautious of the danger. However, if I had pets or children, I'd keep a close eye on them!

Thank you for taking the time to rate us and comment.
We are taking those comments to heart and are looking into the matter. The sockets indeed are being replaced with sturdier ones as the ones we have tend to get loose with frequent usage.
Although the falls are protected at the falls itself, I see your point about the area before the falls at the creek itself.
We will be looking into a way of securing that area as well without compromising view and landscapes.Thank you though for bringing this to our attention.
As for the staff, I apologize that you had this unfortunate experience. We will make sure this is a one-time exchange and all our front desk people (including the new ones) are fully knowledgeable about what Hood River and the area has to offer.
Thank you again for your patronage and hope to welcoming you again soon.

We have stayed at the Columbia Gorge Hotel for Valentines day 2017 and now for our New Years celebration to ring in 2018.
They get it right! The hotel public areas are well decorated, the cleanliness is unbeatable, and the staff are really personable.
We arrived and sat in the lounge by the fire to enjoy cocktails until we could get into our rooms. The service was really great and the appetizers we had were wonderful.
Rick Vaughn the concierge and elevator operator (yes a 20's vintage manual operated elevator) was really helpful getting all our luggage to our rooms and has a vast historical knowledge of the property. Just wonderful. We attended the New Years party which served an outstanding selection of foods in a wonderful atmosphere. I will definitely return again.

Room tip: We have stayed on the Garden side and the River side and both have great views
