Very rewarding 1/2 day "out & back" hike. This hike is a great option if you want to take in the spectacle of Mt Hood without committing an entire day or more to it. The level of challenge is enough that I can't see you getting to the summit of with small children or if you're not in decent shape. The hike doesn't have many steep grades but makes up for it with a consistent steady climb. The summit is just under 5k ft so plan for it to be cool and windy at the summit. The views of Mt. Hood during the hike and at the summit of Tom Dick & Harry Mtn are possibly the best you can get.

Recommend getting an early start to your hike 7 - 8am for a more intimate experience.

Frommer's rated this hike as easy, not so. Most of it is uphill, and it took some effort to get there. However, the hike is beautiful and wonderfully green in the summer. Mirror Lake is tiny, but the view of Mt. Hood in the reflective waters is worth the hike. I've included photographs of our memorable experience.

This is a very nice hike on a very well marked trail. It is about 1.5 miles uphill, is mostly shaded, and your kids may want to turn around, but keep going. When you reach Mirror Lake, your efforts will be paid back in a lovely view of Mt Hood, as well as the Tom, Dick and Harry Mountains which surround the lake. Once at this small lake it is even terrain. There are areas for kids (and adults) to wade in the cool water. Dogs are off leash and also go for a swim. There are some campsites and we talked with one couple who had camped overnight. There are no services on the lake, so whatever you bring in, you need to bring back out. Kids and adults of all ages can do this hike. Pack a picnic lunch and find a nice rock to lean on and enjoy the scenery. You do need a $5.00 parking permit. These cannot be purchased at the parking lot, but instead you need to purchase the permit at the forestry office nearby.

Quick access from Portland. Great for snow shoeing or summer hiking. Follow signs to go up Tom, Dick & Harry for an amazing view and a round trip hike of 6 miles. (Turn left at the big rock pile). Don't forget to get a sno park pass or parking pass to park.
