The snow capped Mt Hood kept calling our name. We drove closer and closer and finally landed at Timberline Lodge where we went two nights and became intimate with Mt Hood in all of it's splendor.
Just simply magnificent.

So...how can you NOT like and NOT love a mountain? Seriously beautiful, majestic and gorgeous. We did some driving, we did some hiking and thoroughly enjoyed our day on the mountain.

As you drive East along I-84 from Portland you can view Mt Hood from almost anyplace along the interstate until you make the turnoff to visit the mountain. Can't miss it in fact. It rises above and dominates the landscape. You can drive up to the Timberline Lodge which sits near the top of the mountain. This lodge was used in the making of "The Shining" (as was the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO) so you might recognize it as you approach the summit. But the real attraction here is the mountain itself, which can be seen in many western movies. If you travel to the Portland area your trip wouldn't be complete without visiting the Mount Hood area..

For a full day of beautiful scenery, the drive south east from Portland through Sandy, around
Mt. Hood, to the Dalles, then back along the river to Portland is worth the trip.
However, choose your weather as road conditions can be tricky in winter and early spring. The low cloud at those times also block the views of the mountain.
