We drove the Mt Hood Scenic Loop today and it is well worth doing if you are in Portland. The roads are excellent and the entire trip is picturesque. Make sure you take the spur to Timberline Lodge; the views of Mt Hood from the lodge are the best you will get. The road is good, but a bit challenging; it rises 2,700 feet over 6 miles!

Coming back to Portland you can stop near Bridge of the Gods to buy fish that was caught that morning. If you haven't already seen the waterfalls along the gorge you can finish your tour with those.

If you like the alpine setting this is it. The Mt Hood lodge is a classic place. On a sunny day the drive is awesome and the view is wow.

Being from Illinois and visiting the Oregon Cascades many times, we never tire of the majestic views of Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainer, further to the North and the other Cascade mountains like Mt. Jefferson and the Three Sisters by Bend, OR. In May, these higher mountains are completely snow covered and just beautiful to view.

We thought we would go for a nice drive around Mt Hood and out to the highway Memorial Day weekend. The drive was scenic and paved for 99 percent of what we completed. We noticed a wee bit of snow so realized we were up high as evident from the climb. However we were unprepared in our Pontiac Vibe for the snow on a switchback as our elevation decreased. We were promptly stuck some 20 feet from where the snow began because it "didn't look that high". Hubby tried to dig us out using a branch but we were high centred. We were very fortunate that a nice couple from Sandy Oregon pulled us out with their 1 ton 4x4 that I should mention they wouldn't have tried to drive through the snow. Beautiful view, only stuck an hour and met great people. Definitely a good story in the end.

This mountain has a towering presence from anywhere in this region. When we drove up to Timberline lodge, it was ~80F for the first time in the year and the snow hadnt melted. We had some great soup at the lodge and my son played in the snow. It was a lot of fun.
