“Poorly organized”
Reviewed September 4, 2011

Went went on Friday night and had tickets for Saturday. We also purchased parking online - supposedly "VIP parking". NO signs directing anyone to VIP parking - not even the people directing traffic could tell us where it was. Ended up parking in free parking.

We got there at 5:15pm - gate was supposed to open at 6pm but they said they would open early. Then they said only those who had chalet or box seats would get in early - made everyone else (and the line was a couple blocks long) wait till after 6pm to enter - and the evet started at 6:45p. Then didn't know where we should stand, cars kept driving through so the line was constantly moving back and forth, and there was no shade. There was no reason to keep everyone out - even when they let everyone in the food vendors weren't even ready till around 7pm.

Not many food/drink vendors - crazy-long lines. Overpriced. Not many port-a-potties - very long lines for them.

If you go on Friday night do not bother to get there early. You have to buy reserved seats so it makes no sense to come early. Don't arrive till around 6:30pm - just before the event starts. Also, be prepared to walk a long ways to your seats unless you buy chalet or box seats. Also, be prepared to have your tickets checks multiple times - they scan your ticket at the entrance so when you get inside they ask to see your ticket over and over - if they stamped or banded people that wouldn't happen.

The Friday night show started off good but then got a bit boring. Not all scheduled performers actually performed that night. Disappointing.

Overall - not recommended. I've been to many, many airshows and this was the only one where we had a bad expereince. We had pre-paid tickets (and "VIP parking") for Saturday but didn't bother going.

“Fine Airshow, but be warned . . .”
Reviewed August 22, 2011

Fine flying and ground displays at the 2011 show, but the hopefully the organizers can fix these problems next year:

- No demonstration schedule: The Air Show website lists the performers but gives no schedule. It's mpossible to know who flies when. Even at the airfield on the day of the event, there is no published schedule. So if there's an act you don't want to miss, you must to be there all day. And even then you can miss something if pick the wrong time to look at a static display that is a long way from the runway.

- Poorly marked free parking: The website says the ticket price includes free parking, but I couldn't find it. I saw one sign with arrows to the free parking, but after 20 minutes of searching in vain, I gave up and paid $5 and parked at the fairgrounds parking lot. It's just across the street from the front entrance to the air show.

- Total lack of shade: Most air shows I've attended have at least some of the static displays inside hangars or tents. At Hillsboro, nothing is out of the sun. Bring protection: lots of sunscreen, hats, umbrellas, etc., or you will fry.

- Cold water is expensive; free water is hot: Small bottles of cold water cost $3. The only alternative is to draw water from huge, industrial-size plastic barrels that sit all day in the sun. And you need to bring your own water bottle to fill -- no cups or containers provided. The sale of the cold water bottles supports local charities, so the profits go to a good cause, but if you need to keep your family hydrated, bring lots of cash or prepare them to drink warm water.

Kudos -- Thanks to the organizers for offering free admission to veterans and military retirees!

“Blue Angels”
Reviewed April 9, 2010

Not every year, but they have brought in the Blue Angels sometimes. Great show, cannot miss!! The stunts are unbelivable. They also have alot of shopping and food. Be sure to wear sunblock cause there is no shade!! It also will take a while to get out of there, lots of traffic, one year it took us an hour to get out of the parking lot.
