We stay here everytime we are traveling the Oregon Coast. It's rustic but has all the things you need. Great laundry room, nice big showers. Yoga, a small gym. And cabins if you don't have a rig. The staff is really friendly and they are truely pet friendly. Walk right out the camp ground on to a 6 mile beach that is horse and dog friendly. It's a great place to stay. We love it so much we bought a house there.

We stayed here in a 5th wheel and loved it. The setting is beautiful...surrounded by lush forests on one side and a wide creek that flows directly into the Pacific on the other. There is a short path that leads from the park out to the beach and ocean. All sites are full hookups and some of them have hot tubs with a deck! That is something I have never seen before in any RV park. We have already made reservations for a hot tub site on our return trip! We are fulltimers and have traveled extensively. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Thanks also to the very friendly and helpful workampers that maintain the park and work in the office/store.

We reserved for two nights and ended up staying for a week! Some sites were noisy, if one stayed by Hwy 101 (these could be windy also). However, most sites were peaceful and fantastic!

The staff was over-the-top! Valerie, Karen, Donna and Cucina (hope that is spelled correctly!) and "our man about the campus" Skip were just outstanding and wanting to make our stay well worth it! Thank you staff at Turtle Rock Resort a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

There were some full-timers that could have kept their places up a little better and on our last night there, the staff put a van-camper right next to us. This really did not make any sense as there were other sites right down from us. They were a nice couple, but I, for one, did not want to have our campfire with them so close. Oh well, right place, right time!

Overall, a wonderful place to stay!

Turtle Rock RV Park Review

SETTING:
Gold Beach, Oregon is in a very remote and isolated area. So there don’t appear to be many tourists visiting it compared to other areas of the Oregon Coast. This isolation provides many plusses and minuses depending on what you are looking for in a vacation. In this town is one RV park that is unusually close to the Ocean called “Turtle Rock RV Park” likely due to the rock formation that is seen as you walk to the ocean from the park. It closely looks like a large turtle on the beach and is rather amazing!

Adjacent this RV Park is a very nice remote/private beach and a small mountain that provides a natural windbreaker to mitigate the strong coastal winds. If you want to experience camping adjacent the ocean this could be the park for you.

QUALITY OF THIS FACILITY:
A composite of the write-ups (see below) I reviewed before camping at this park seem to accurately depict what to expect. As I was not a part of the selection process, these reviews were not of value to me. I will therefore not address whether or not I would recommend staying there or would stay there again. Instead I will try to paint a word picture of what to expect when camping there and let the reader be the judge of whether this park is the place for him/her. I want to add that I have stayed at many wonderful RV parks that have very high ratings with no unpleasant surprises for visitors so I have found no reason to write a review for them since they strive for excellence. This park deserves my review to help prevent surprises for visitors.

AMENITIES AND AESTHETICS:
The campsites have full hookups and grassy lawns surrounding each site. The austere RV parking sites are not paved but do have some gravel with grass growing through it. We needed to use our yellow 10-block leveling kit, a first for an RV Park, since the sites are not level—so bring plenty of leveling blocks. The campground roads are mostly gravel with muddy water-filled potholes when raining. It is almost impossible to keep the inside of your RV clean as there is abundant small particular matter that gets tracked in despite every attempt to keep it out with exterior mats, etc.

Although it is rather unaesthetic, the RV dump site and assortment of dumpsters seem to be the central theme and are located in the middle of the park. They have a comical sign at the RV dump site for those who fail to follow their detailed dumping instructions that says “POOP HAPPENS!”

Our “pre-assigned” site (likely the worst in the park!) faced an unsightly maintenance area that appeared to have several dilapidated RVs (the maintenance workers may be living in) and a large assortment of unsightly rusty equipment, trash barrels, building materials, storage/work shacks, etc. The campground manager was leaving for the day as we arrived and so it was not possible to request a more aesthetically desirable site (among the many empty sites) after we located our site. The full-time residents who pay $350.00/month had better sites. With their low-cost Oregon RV plates this campground provides very low-cost living for those locals with limited funds—better for them than living in homeless camps!

We paid the full rate of $32.40/night indirectly through a group, however one fellow who joined our group late had separately obtained a far better site and rate of $15.00 per night using a discount club called www.passportamerica.com. I would say that the parks acceptance of these lower rates may reflect the caliber and quality of the park and how desperate they are for customers and money.

There is no restroom in this RV Park—repeat “NO RESTROOM”, however, they have six individual shower rooms for guests in the central shower/laundry building. Two of the shower rooms were locked up tight and had signs that said “CLOSED FOR THE SEASON” leaving only four shower rooms for those using this park including our large group of RVers. Each shower room has one toilet and “three”– yes three separate signs with assorted instructions on how to help keep the toilets from plugging up and overflowing. Should you have an unfortunate and urgent need to use one of the toilets, it could be rather distressing if four of the full-time residents or other campers were currently using the four showers for an extended period of time. The nearby posted sign saying “POOP HAPPENS!” might provide needed comfort in your situation of distress!

During our stay in mid April it was so cold in the shower/toilet rooms (upper 30’s to low 40’s) that nobody seemed to ever use them. These shower rooms have no heaters so guests must be rather hearty to enjoy this aspect of their camping experience. We had an opportunity to use one of the hot tubs associated with one of the ($160.00/night) rental units but we decided to forgo it as we were concerned about their maintenance based upon how the restrooms and park were being maintained.

The full-timers next to our site seemed to enjoy coming and going at odd times between midnight and 5:00 AM which was slightly annoying. I would think they would separate these full-time locals from the normal campers who are there for recreation instead of low-cost living and whatever they are doing all night.

Because there were few other campers using this park, our group was given exclusive use of a very nice appearing facility that was a short drive or long walk from the RV area. We tried walking but the campground is unlighted to help find your way back—I mean it was pitch black at night. There was no designated parking area for the recreation/group meeting facility—it was just every man for himself! The beautiful recreation facility had two very nice kitchen areas, but lacked an HVAC system. There was absolutely no fresh air entering the facility to replace that consumed by the group within it. There were a couple of portable electric heaters available to warm up this very large and cold facility. A fireplace in the room was used the first night but seemed to also consume the oxygen in the room making a stay in the facility less enjoyable. The facility had nice tables and a few nice chairs, however, the bulk of the chairs were very flimsy metal/plastic chairs that were rather uncomfortable.

RECOMMENDED IMPROVEMENTS:
Since this park has a phenomenal beach location I would recommend that they pave the gravel roads and the RV parking sites and make them level. Put in some sort of visibility blocks for the maintenance area and move the central RV and trash dumpsite to that area. Add some form of lighting in the park for safety. Add a ventilation system to the recreation facility and replace the flimsy plastic chairs with more substantial and comfortable chairs. Install a functional/heated restroom facility. If maintenance could be provided, install one or two hot tubs for park guests. Make the park a desirable destination spot to attract more visitors and increase the cash flow. I would love to stay there adjacent the beautiful beach if it was a cleaned up park with improved amenities.

We enjoyed having your group stay with us. They are fun folks! Several of them came into the office to tell us how much they enjoyed our resort. Your wagon master, who is very good at his job, was pleased with us. Some asked about making reservations for future stays.

We’re sorry you didn’t enjoy us as much as others in your group. We wish you would have let us know you were unhappy with your site, we would have gladly moved you. Any office staff could have given you another site, not just the manager. The office was staffed until at least 7pm every night you were here. We do apologize for not having the two middle bathrooms closed when your group was here. That was our oversight and not a good thing. Again if you would have let us know we would have been happy to open them for you.

We do have parking for our group facility. The facility holds eighty guests and there are three parking areas next to it. We do not have parking attendants to show you to the parking sites. No one has ever complained about the parking situation before! There are plenty of windows in the facility which could have been opened if you felt it was stuffy. The room has four wall heaters as well as a fireplace and extra floor heaters are provided as needed.

We do have heat lamps in every bathroom and you are quite right it was unseasonably cold when you were here.

Most people enjoy the darkness of the night sky and being able to see so many stars, some don’t. Most carry flashlights. The exterior of the group facility and the bathhouse is very well lit.

We do have RV sites with hot tubs, decks, and BBQs, there are seven of those sites. Your suggestion of adding spa RV sites is an excellent one. Our spa sites are very popular and we do not get complaints about them. You would have been perfectly safe in one of the cottage hot tubs and might have enjoyed it. We keep our many hot tubs very well maintained.

Poop Happens was meant to be a humorous sign indicating the doggie deposal containers.

We try hard to make everyone’s stay a pleasant one and are sorry we couldn’t do that with you. We appreciate the patience it took to write such a detailed letter, you are a good writer!

This is a gravel road park, sites aren't level & there isn't much of a view even on the creek side. It is too close to the highway to give a 'peaceful' description. It appears there are some long-term renters that aren't the most tidy. The cottage next to us had 3 dogs in it. We won't be back.

After reading the web site and even the reviews (I recognize that people will have different opinions and standards), I booked a spa RV site; I booked a water view site for the friends we were traveling with. The office staff was very nice, but my first clue about this place should have been the dirty gravel road in. The only good thing about the RV site with the spa was that it was paved. However, the deck was dirty and covered with cobwebs. The table and chairs were rusty and dirty. The "house" next door was a "site for sore eyes" (and it was the dog sitting house; though all the dogs were quiet the night we were there.) The spa was ok, but given it was on the dirty deck, it was less than inviting and didn't get used. The river view was blocked by many trees and bushes. Our friends RV site was dirty and gross. The gravel was pretty much gone. The grass was spotty and not mowed. They didn't really have a river view as the bushes were overgrown.

The rest of this place is pretty run down. Grass spotty, roads are all dirt and/or spotty gravel, few trees, and "residents" are allowed to have major junk and trash on their sites. This place is also below the highway so there is a lot of traffic noise. It does have a path to the beach; that part we liked. However, for the money we spent, it's not worth it at all!

They expect you to pay peak prices, but they lack peak performance! This was the worst place we stayed on our trip. First there was over an extra 100.00 dollars in taxes that was added to our bill that was not disclosed until we got there. I sucked it up and thought we are on the ocean, and we were out there to spend some time with my mom and her husband who we haven't seen in forever. Our bill was over 250 a night and 750 for 3 nights. You think ok it's the peak season and it's the ocean. We were told there was a double bed in the upstairs room by Kachina, well that wasn't true. They were twins. And the ceiling of the room a 5 year old child would not be able to stand up in there. Also the place was very dirty, especially the inside window...Inside and out, and in the tracks. Greasy finger prints all over inside. The hide a bed couch, when pulled out had popcorn, sand, and dust in it. The kitchen table had built in grime. Cupboards had handles that were loose and coming off. The dead bolt on the front door would not lock. The tv was really annoying as it had static that would come through it every 2 to3 min. The fridge had crud on it. The only saving grace to this place was the ocean and the hot tub...Which ours worked our neighbors did not. I don't know if these are new owners or what, but they are NOT kept up very well at all! In fact our cabin that we stayed is up for sale, Cabin 39. It is on there web site. Maybe that explains it, I don't know. I would not recommend this place and will not be coming back. You can do a lot better for the money than this place. And we have stayed at nicer places on the ocean while paying less.
