Bravo, Bravo, Bravo, Tu Tu Tun Lodge!!

Absolutely the most exquisite, relaxing, pampered, vacation experience that my husband and I have enjoyed in years! We typically have a difficult time deciding on a vacation destination simply because our home in the California Sierra's, is very much like a vacation in comfort and esthetic pleasure. This fabulous Lodge has surpassed our expections in every way! The accomodations are beyond amazing in detail, with particular attention to comfort. The 500 thread count sheets with imported Italian coverlet, toppped with a dreamlike goose down comforter, sets the expectation of a dream eveloped sleep that does not disappoint! The bed envelops the body like a cloud from heaven floating down the Rogue......The five star cuisine is comparable to the finest San Francisco dinner experience. I enjoy business dinners in San Francisco several times a month and I am unable to recall a dinner experience as dedicated to perfection as the four dinners I have thus far enjoyed at the Tu Tu Tun Lodge. The Innkeepers have committed 35 plus years to perfecting a restful, attentive, superior vacation experience that is caring and personal to each guest. Our fireplace room amentities include a steam shower, a bidet with warmed seat, a private patio with spring water soaking tub that overlooks the serene and magical Rogue River, heated tile floor in the bathroom, and on, and on, and on.........too numerous particulars to note here. This is our first visit and will absolutely be followed for many more in future. By the way, when we arrived, we were greeted by the Innkeepers who greeted us by our first names and asked about our dog whose name they somehow knew, as well!! Amazing!!! The Tu Tu Tun Lodge is much too special to keep as a selfish secret. Check out their website, it speaks eloquently and truthfully of itself.............p.s. when visiting, don't miss the Rogue River tours, fishing, and jet boat opporutunties....so much unforgetable fun!!!

My husband and I recently stayed at the Tu Tu Tun lodge to celebrate my birthday. We had the most wonderful time. We were in a room in the lodge upstairs and it had the most outstanding view. It was off season so we didn’t have dinner at the lodge but they did prepare us a wonderful continental breakfast each morning which was put in our fridge during the room cleaning. It was so nice to wake leisurely and not have to go anywhere except to our back deck. They have these great coffee makers and stock the fridge full of fresh ground coffee. I felt totally pampered even though it was off season, and they didn’t offer their usual full services. Every staff member we encountered was just delightful, including the gardner.

There is nothing quite like sleeping with the sliding door open, listening to the absolute quite and cuddling up under a cozy down comforter to soothe the soul and body. We lucked out and the weather was just great. We woke very early one morning to the sun shining so we just sat on the deck and enjoyed our coffee watching the “Rogue”. When ever we go to Portland we are going to make the Tu Tu Tun a regular stop. Even if it is off season, it is still a top notch destination with great hospitality.

While the hotel was nice, it was far less than I expected from the reviews and advertising. We were there during off season, so there were no dining facilities, and housekeeping was severly lacking. The setting was supposed to be private and out of the way, hidden on the Rogue River, but you find the hotel is surrounded by homes on both sides with no real hiking up or downstream without walking through private yards. There was a foot path directly in front of our "private patio", where people would walk by just a foot away from our "private soaking tub". It was raining so water poured down from the open deck above while we sat in the tub. When the tub above was used, water splashed down on us (You can see them too). With no T.V. or radio, you hear every noise from other rooms. Breakfast is in your room when you arrive, but ours was leftovers from the previous occupants, the fruit was partially eaten, and leftover takeouts were in the fridge and smelled. The coffee container was almost empty, and there were no coffee filters, the previous tenants had made coffee anyway without the filter and plugged the machine. When you call the front desk, you just get a recording to call the owner at home. A couple hours later they showed up with coffee and appologies. HARDLY A FIVE STAR HOTEL, got a full refund and a free stay which wont be used.

The room and setting were beautiful. Staff and owner were overzealous and pretentious. We chose not to eat dinner here because of the large group tables where seating is arranged by staff. Dining at a private table was not an option. If mingling is on your agenda, this is the place for you. If you want to spend time with your loved ones or a romantic interlude, this is not the place for you. Secondly, as previously stated, we did not eat any of our meals at the lodge, nor did anyone carry our baggage, etc. The owner, Mrs VanZant, upon check out, informed us of a $70 gratuity added to our bill. When we asked why we were charged a gratuity when no meals were eaten at the lodge, or services provided other than handing us our key at check-in, staff acted as if this charge was standard, and after explaining to staff, and owner that charging a gratuity for no services rendered was inappropriate, they reluctantly removed it from the bill.

"4-star-portland", Dirk and Laurie Van Zante, Owner at Tu Tu Tun Lodge, responded to this reviewResponded April 3, 2008

Your experience must have been as upsetting and disappointing for you as it was for us! Bottom Line: We failed to provide you with the vacation you anticipated. Please know that last May, after your departure our office staff had a meeting to discuss how we could better convey our available “couples” services to guests. Most evenings guests choose to eat at tables of eight in the main dining room. We try to be very clear about the other dining options; candle light dinner in your room, romantic dinner for two in Tututni Waters Cabana, dinner for two or small groups in our library. Tu Tu’ Tun is all about personalizing everyone’s experience to meet their individual expectations. The fact that we did not anticipate and take care of your needs was a huge oversight on our part. At the very least, we hope you availed yourself of our morning newspaper/coffee tray, our afternoon refreshment bar, and our hors d’ oeuvre hour--all complimentary.

As a community of 40 long term employees, we all took your unhappiness to heart, both when you departed, and when reading your review almost a year later. As you pointed out, we did not earn the service charge. Our policy has always been to do what ever it takes to satisfy, if not exceed our guests expectations. We realize that we may never get a chance to make this right with you personally, but please know that each and every guest, one at a time, is important to us. We know that many businesses say exactly that but don’t really back it up. Perhaps you will return to Tu Tu’ Tun, and give us another chance to personalize your vacation, and make it everything you hoped it would be. If not, your feedback will most certainly help us with others. For that we say thank you.

For Valentines day weekend we stayed for three nights in the Garden House and it was everything we had hoped. We were two couples which worked just fine, (a third couple could've come too since there are three rooms in the house) and even though it was their slow time we didn't run out of things to do. Friday night, bought crab at the local seafood market and feasted. Saturday, the boys went fishing (no luck) while we stayed and had in room massages (soooo wonderful!). Ate lamb from the local market cooked by my sweetheart in the fully equipped kitchen in the house. Sunday the boys rented a kayak from the lodge that we brought upriver so they could float down and fish while we fished along the bank in several spots. Lo' and behold, my companion caught a fish right in front of the lodge just as the boys were coming around the bend of the river in the kayak. We screamed to wake the dead with the large flopping rainbow trout. Still, the boys had caught no fish, while we, chatting away and sipping wine coolers got not just one, but two fish that day! Take that, guys! We cooked them up for dinner that night accompanied by some steak so surf and turf it was. All in all a great vacation and going in the off months really cuts back the cost. We're coming back in October because we had such a great time and would like to be there when the kitchen is open.

Only suggestions:
The Japanese soaking tub on the deck could be upgraded to a large hot tub, but it's not a must.
We loved the food and wine in the afternoons which just made us think we were sooo missing out with the kitchens being closed. Couldn't you have maybe weekend dinners and require reservations from the guests beforehand? Even a set menu for one evening would be such a great thing.

Thanks for the great vacation, we had a wonderful time.
