Steam-powered historic railway that travels a beautiful portion of the coast between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach. The train travels at a leisurely pace so that you can ride in the open car without freezing, or in one of the enclosed cars with the option of opening your window or not. The volunteers were very knowledgeable and did their best to answer questions, the conductor was very friendly and personable. Be sure to get a picture with the engine in Garibaldi before you leave.

We came all the way up the Oregon Coast for the Sunset dinner train. It met our expectations and then some. The food, service and scenery were wonderful.
Be sure and make reservations.

This was a wonderful experience on a beautiful September Saturday! We were able to sit in the car with no roof and stand to see everything. The stop at the beach was just long enough to walk to the water and take pictures. The conductors were very friendly and asked and answered questions.
I recommend this trip!

Our friend from France was with us and found it a wonderfully, memorable experience. We went South to Tillamook Cheese Factory and then over to Rosanna's for dinner. Perfect day!

One note - if you want to save your seat, be sure to return early because people get on at the stop and don't know that there are already people who have been sitting there. :)

We took three young boys (ages 1-3) who love choo-choos on this ride. There was a completely open car behind the engine, then a roofed car with open sides, then a closed Pullman car. The train goes pretty slowly, but it's not that far from Garibaldi to Rockaway Beach. The views were nice. People slow down on the road or come out of their homes and shops to wave at the train coming by. It's fun.

I think some of us adults were more into the fact that it was a steam engine than the kids were. They would have been happy to ride any choo-choo. You go from one town to the other (about half an hour), then get off and explore the town/play on the playground for a half hour, then get back on the train and go in reverse back to the town where you started, so the whole round trip takes about an hour and a half, which was a pretty good length of time for our kids' attention span.

I believe kids aged 2 and younger were free; adults were $12 each. This seems maybe a little steep for a relatively short train ride, but is probably fair since they are maintaining a steam engine and you don't just find those anywhere.

You can start your round trip in either town, but I recommend starting in Garibaldi, since Rockaway Beach seemed to have more attractions and a nice playground for the kids to play in during the intermission. By car, it's only a few minutes between towns.

For just the shore excursion we were on, there did not appear to be bathrooms, so go before you board if you need to. Be prepared for your kids to want some kettle corn or ice cream from one of the shops during the intermission. Vendors come out to hawk their wares.
