My car broke down in the small town of Fossil and I could not have been more fortunate. The motel (fully remodled and under new owership) was great. The owner, Anne is wonderful, and the town was so welcoming. Anyone who is looking for anything more than what the Fossil Motel has to offer should not be out in the country anyways. Just saying....:)

I was fortunate to find this motel on last minute's notice. The owners were friendly, accommodating and interesting (ask them about teaching art to underprivileged Costa Rican children in the off season). The room had a 70's look, but the amenities (lights, cable TV & microwave) were new, functional and the bed was firm. Most of all, the room was clean and well cared for. There were small printed notices about water use & turning the heater off when not in use, etc. Thoughtful and informative without being pretentious. The rates were great too. When the owner quoted me the cost I asked "per night?" and when she said "no, for both nights", I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough. Fossil is a plain well cared for town nestled in some of the most beautiful country in the world and the Fossil Motel is a reflection of that. In other words it's right sized for its location. Too expect the motel to be a destination in itself (i.e. Great Wolf Lodge, Harrison Hot Springs) would have been unrealistic on my part. Rather it's a warm, clean place with a firm bed at a destination that only nature could have provided.

I use it for motel-camping while exploring eastern Oregon. It is very plain and has probably not been updated since built. The heater works, there is hot water in the shower, refig and cable TV. All I do is sleep there and it works fine. As to the comments on the "owner's wife", well she is probably at least a half owner and she has always been very friendly to me. I've visited during some very cold weather and when I arrive, she has already turned on the heat for me, so it is warm and cozy from the get go. All you can ask for the price.

While the rooms were acceptable, and relatively clean, the owner's wife was extremely unfriendly and inconsiderate. The owner himself was friendly and very helpful but the attitude of his wife made me very uncomfortable. Would not stay there again.

Cute old cinderblock buildings with metal casement windows, but the rooms are shabby, worn, and tired. The shower was a metal stall with peeling paint; someone hand-wrote arrows with "off" and "on" directions above the knobs. A closet-sized area in one corner of the room was walled off with do-it-yourself sheetrock, for reasons unknown. The mattress was old; an extra folded-up portable bed in the corner of the room looked even older. But the proprietors are friendly; they provide complimentary coffee, tea, and popcorn; the microwave, TV, and mini-fridge all worked fine; and the place was extremely quiet even though a motorcycle rally was taking place in town that day. It's the only option in town other than a couple of B&Bs.

Old and shabby. Looks better on the outside than inside. The metal shower had peeling paint and rust. The rooms are badly in need of paint. The bedding was threadbare and the beds were old and squeaky When we opened the door we were overwhelmed with a nasty chemical smell. The owners did not put up much of a fuss when we asked for our money back. They seemed confident that we would not be able to find other lodging, but were able to find a very nice bed and breakfast close to town.
