If you want a weird guy always scolding you not to use online directions to find his place, and have to use a match to light a stove in a room with beds that are loud as a squeaky symphony when you move an inch, the room also has a strong smell of lemony wood and a fridge in the garage, you've come to the right place. Feel free to take a trip down to the nearby creek that you will touch a toe to and coming running back to your bad room wet, yet dried up from mosquitoes. Although it is the closest cabins to Crater Lake, the one good thing you will get from this experience is the laughs you can share when you tell your awful story to friends. You'll talk about the peculiar owner and the a walk you decided to take that ended with running back from the pounding rain and numerous mosquitoes, and unable to open stiff lock on the door.

There was a time when highways ran through towns rather than around them. There was a time when mom & pop gas stations would open up at all hours of the night to provide service. There was a time when the family would load up a wicker basket with food stuffs and a satchel of traveling clothes, and set off on an adventure in their Packards, Studebakers, or Hudsons. If this prologue evokes fond memories, then Wilson's Cottages is a stop-over that will make the traveller feel right at home. Built in 1937, this hostel, located near the south entrance to Crater Lake, features individual cabins, built of wood that was felled, milled and finished on the property. Evidences of the craftsmanship involved can be seen in the flooring, wainscoating, doors, frames and sashes. Not that this isn't a sufficient glimpse of the past, but the office doubles as a museum, replete with antique typewriters, power-line insulators, and grocery store items of years gone by.

We were looking for a quiet place, away from it all, where we could hole up for a couple of days and take a break during our two-week road trip in the Pacific Northwest. This place was perfect. The hand-built cottages are roomy and have a small kitchen with old but perfectly functional (and very clean) appliances (fridge, stove, microwave, and an oil heater that could defrost a glacier). The owner respected our privacy, but when we needed something he produced it right away, and he stopped by to check that we had oil for the heater. The location is great, just south of the border of Crater Lake National Park and about a 15 min drive from the South Gate, and closer than the other places in Ft. Klamath.

Wilsons Cottages does not take credit cards, but the owner accepted a check for payment. The owner advised us to buy groceries in Bend as there are no big stores anywhere near Ft. Klamath, only a couple of tiny places in town and a camp store in the park. They have pots, pans, utensils, etc. to borrow, but I don't know if they run out when they get busy.

Overall, we were very happy here, but this place isn't for everyone -- if you're looking for a traditional hotel experience, you probably won't like it, but if you're looking for a beautiful, isolated spot in the forest, it's great. Web site: http://www.wilsonscottages.com/
