Owner description: Considered the largest sea cave in the United States, this site is where Steller sea lions and their cubs take shelter each year. Sea Lion Caves is a privately owned wildlife preserve and bird sanctuary. The Caves has been in operation since 1932 preserving and protecting the wildlife under our care. We are open 363 days a year only closed on Christmas and Thanksgiving day. Our normal hours of operation are 9 am until dusk year round. We are not a zoo and the animals are free to come and go as they please. The sea lions can usually be found at either of four locations on the property; in the Cave, in the water, at the Lookout/rockery, and on other nearby rock ledges. HOWEVER, THE SEA LIONS ARE NOT ALWAYS IN THE CAVE OR MAY BE MIGRATING OUT OF AREA - THEY ARE WILD ANIMALS AND COME AND GO AS THE PLEASE. CALL AHEAD FOR INFORMATION. Self-guided are the rule, but guided tours are available.

The sea cave is unmatched by other coastal attractions. Not only do you see the sea lions in the cave, but have beautiful views of Heceta Head Lighthouse. The owners and staff are super friendly and kind. Admission is reasonable - they even give a discount if the sea lions aren't in the cave. You also have a chance to see gray whales. My favorite attraction along the Oregon Coast since I was five years old.

Unique and interesting. It is a fun place to go and to take visitors! During stormy weather it is especially good because the cave is full of sea lions then. Sometimes in the summer they are all out in the ocean playing and while that is still interesting it is not quite as exciting.

great place to take the kids for a summer adventure. Entrance price not to high so a family should be able to afford it. There are spots outside to sit and watch the ocean and also maybe see some of the sea lions if you do not want to pay to go down to the cave. Parking can be tricky and you must cross the 101 highway so be careful.

The sea lions were out when we got there. We got in at a discounted rate because of that, and the cave itself was pretty neat, though probably not worth the $10 apiece. We did see sea lions later, a little further south at Shore Acres State Park.

Like other reviewers, we went at a time when there were no sea lions to be seen! The receptionist said that she "could not guarantee that we would see any sea lions" and they offered a slight discount on the entrance fee. But I would not recommend visiting this place if there are no sea lions. We ran into a couple who had just come from Newport, Oregon and had seen many sea lions for free in the port area. We went and spent 30 minutes up close with sea lions...for free! Call before going. I believe that the staff are forthcoming about the presence (or absence) of the sea lions.
