Attraction details
Owner description: Considered the largest sea cave in the United States, this site is where Steller sea lions and their cubs take shelter each year. Sea Lion Caves is a privately owned wildlife preserve and bird sanctuary. The Caves has been in operation since 1932 preserving and protecting the wildlife under our care. We are open 363 days a year only closed on Christmas and Thanksgiving day. Our normal hours of operation are 9 am until dusk year round. We are not a zoo and the animals are free to come and go as they please. The sea lions can usually be found at either of four locations on the property; in the Cave, in the water, at the Lookout/rockery, and on other nearby rock ledges. HOWEVER, THE SEA LIONS ARE NOT ALWAYS IN THE CAVE OR MAY BE MIGRATING OUT OF AREA - THEY ARE WILD ANIMALS AND COME AND GO AS THE PLEASE. CALL AHEAD FOR INFORMATION. Self-guided are the rule, but guided tours are available.

“Interestingly Fun”

This is a great place to take your family. People of all ages will love this. There's a lot of uphill/downhill walking (didn't bother me though). The views are really beautiful.

“Seals upon Seals”

No other place to go & see so many seals together. You can see them from above or take the elevator down to come up closer to them. Very nice for families.

“Very good for first timers during peak times of season.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 8, 2012

I've only been here twice in my life, only once down into the caves (and unfortunately there were no Sea Lions to be seen). Would have been down into the caves twice, but the prices are a little steep nowadays.

“Those are really BIG!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 7, 2012

Sea Lions are huge! The fact that they are quite a ways below you is a big help. If however, you take the elevator down to the cave itself, be prepared for a cacophony of barking, and a rank smell. Nonetheless, it's a very interesting journey.

“Sea Lion Caves”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2012

The cave is beautiful and impressive, and there's lots of interesting information about sea lions on display in the cave; but beware of entrance price reductions. They probably mean that there are no sea lions to view.
