We ambushed a family member with a surprise birthday luncheon at Restobar on a Tuesday during their very busy tourist season. They were happy to take our reservation a week in advance and arranged a great patio table for the 6 of us. They were fine with us bringing in an armload of gifts and balloons. Very accommodating
Many in the group decided to have halibut for lunch. It is one of my favorites at Restobar, always moist and well seasoned. Lunch portions were very nice! All 4 who had the halibut were very happy with their selections.
i decided to try their oysters and was pleased when the waitress was able to get the chef to make both styles they serve into one order (they do go the distance to please!). The oysters were perfect--terrific coating that pan fried up to encase the oyster and keep each one hot. Flavor was exceptional as well. The regular coating enhanced the sweetness of the oysters without covering the delicate flavor of the oyster. The spicy version was a great added burst of flavor, especially with the contrast of the aiole that came with it. i was glad i got to try both versions, and was especially glad i tried the regular first. i give their oysters my highest recommendation and would suggest You try both types too.
i remembered the exceptional taste of their San Marzano pasta sauce and had their pasta as a side to the oysters. Excellent pairing. Only problem was deciding which taste would be the final one to the lunch. What a happy dilemma!
My wife had their meatballs for her lunch. They came covered in the San Marzano sauce. Big, juicy perfect meatballs. She was very happy!
The patio is a very nice place to dine. Ample room between tables, lots of plants and lots sunlight coming through the transparent fiberglass cover. Interesting art decorations and plenty of colorful blankets if the weather is too cool.
Our server was very professional and very fun to work with. The desserts she brought round to tempt the birthday boy were huge pieces of cake that might have required all 6 of us to finish any of the single pieces. i remember thinking that the double chocolate fudge looked very tempting, but the tiramisu especially looked incredible. Unfortunately, all of us were so filled from lunch that we decided not to share any cake.
We have now had dinner there twice and lunch once. Never been disappointed by the food. Always been amazed at the complexity of the flavors. When they are busy, the food takes a bit longer to arrive-but that is true of any restaurant.
One thing i can tell You-the food they present is well worth the wait. Prices are reasonable, food is excellent. Staff is very skilled. Their bread basket comes with a nice cup of pesto and butter-if it looks like there may be a wait due to the restaurant being full, that is an excellent starter. Or try their version of clam chowder with spinach. It is outstanding!
As for me, i can't wait for my next trip to Florence to revisit the Restobar version of oysters. They were something special!
