“Ultimate neighborhood pub”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2011

The McMenamin brothers are a Pacific Northwest phenomenon. Finding home, mostly, in retired school buildings, victorian houses, government buildings (all right, the "poor farm" from early 1900s) and even funeral parlors, they have established a chain of brew pubs and inns which stretch, like a string of pearls, up the I-5 corridor from Medford, Oregon to Seattle, Washington. Their menus are reliable pub fare - from the standard burgers and fries to salads to pastas to hearty soups to hummus plates to pizzas. They are well crafted with fresh ingredients and a nod to wholesome and healthy eating. The beers, brewed in-house are good and provide a taste for any palate - from lightest to darkest. And all this atmosphere and wholesome fare come at modest prices. I pick the East 19th Street Cafe, because it is my neighborhood pub, and I eat there often. However, there are other, equally good McMenamins in Eugene, Portland, Seattle and all spots in between.

“Good food, excellent happy hour”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2011

McMenamins' East 19th Street location in Eugene offers a pleasant campus pub atmosphere with solid food and value. We recommend making it for happy hour (4-6 daily) for excellent deals on food and beer. Be sure to ask your server what beer is on the nitro tap.

“Get Drunk, Then It Will Be "Fantastic"”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2009

I have eaten at this VERY mediocre beer-aurant more than 30 times. Why? Because it has beer, free parking, is conveniently located near the UO campus, and can accommodate large groups. The staff consists of mostly younger students who clearly have little or no service experience, and it shows. The food is frequently bland and sometimes unpleasant, very high school cafeteria-esque. Occasionally the food is not too terrible, especially when choking it down with a couple beers. However, the other day I received a cheeseburger that consisted of a pre-made, pre-frozen patty tasting of wood pulp, topped with an old clump of lettuce that looked like something a pet store wouldn't even feed its rabbits. Disgusting! The bottom line here is that the staff (including the kitchen staff - I shall not call them cooks) is not properly managed by individuals that know what they are doing. My guess is that the management is a loose conglomerate of what used to be these very same young, inexperienced students who found themselves hanging around Eugene after (or in loo of) graduating. Now these dopes are running the place... into the ground. About the beer: the beer is usually cold and pretty good, BUT! But I have had to reject beer several times due to it tasting flat, stale, overly sweet, gross, etc. Usually I'll choose a different beer and it will taste just fine. So if you're a drinker, get drunk, and then eat. Otherwise, steer clear of this place until the owner comes to his/her senses and changes things.
