Description: Marche, located in Eugene, Oregon, opened in August 1998. The restaurant, which seats 80 guests, has an exhibition kitchen featuring a beautiful wood-fired oven. There is also a stylish bar and a large outdoor dining area, covered with awnings and umbrellas and surrounded by a garden of herbs and edible flowers. Marche takes its name from the French word for market – a word that describes our location in the bustling 5th street Market and more importantly, our philosophy of cooking. The menu is based on the foods one would find at a farmer’s market: fresh, seasonal, and regional. Marche is committed to using only those ingredients that are at their best, so our menu evolves as we move through the seasons of the year. Marche also believes in using the highest quality and most healthful ingredients available and to that end use organic, free range, and chemical free products. The culinary technique is French-based: intensely flavored and simply but beautifully presented.

While driving through Eugene, past the University of Oregon campus, we stopped our car and asked Google for the 10 best restaurants in Eugene. From the 10 we selected Marche'.
Located in an upscale shopping center, the restaurant is simple but comfortable. Friendly, accommodating staff. Oysters, ($3.00) each were tasty. Fresh artisan-style bread and a glass of Muscadet ($8.00). Basque Fish&Shellfish stew ($26.00) was hearty, fresh and filled with a thick tomato broth and potatoes, peppers and garlic. Substantial and delicious.
A special for the evening was a tender bottom fish ($24.00) served on a potato-cole slaw salad that was crunchy providing a soft and snappy texture when consumed. Doubtless, Marche' is a favorite among locals. We sat near two University of Oregon professors who seemed to be repeat-guests. Eugene, be happy with this one!

Housed in a refurbished old warehouse, this is in with a group of upscale boutique shops. The French inspired menu deliver in fine fashion. Their salads are always a lunch treat. The service is efficient and pleasant.

We stayed at the adjacent Inn At The 5th hotel which was great. Breakfast at this affiliated restaurant was a washout. We simply wanted oatmeal in a timely fashion and instead got slow, "we must be in France" service. Don't waste your time.

This French restaurant in Eugene should not be missed. Make sure to try the fried oysters. They also use a local ketchup with their delicious pomme frites.

We live in San Francisco and are spoiled with the number of restaurant choices in the City and Bay Area. When we travel to visit family in Eugene, Oregon we can always rely on a first class meal at Marche. Last night was no exception. We both had a wonderfully light watermelon salad as a starter - red and yellow melon sprinkled with shaved smoked ricotta salata cheese and topped with balsamic vinegar. I had a sweet corn and basil soufflé for a main and my wife had the coho salmon. Both mains were accompanied with a (different) assortment of fresh local vegetables. The quality and ambiance is more like Napa/Sonoma than San Francisco. Because of its unique position in Eugene dining it is wise to make a reservation a day or two ahead for peak hours.
