“Worth the trip”
Review of Spencer Butte

Spencer Butte

As others have said, it is a good paved easy trail until the climb over the boulders to the top. Worth the scramble up to see the amazing views. Beautiful forest. High elevation gains up to 1000'.

From the time you start your hike in the forest, till you top out on the rocks about 800 feet up, you will be surrounded by natural beauty. It is not a hike for those out of shape or those lacking good footwear. While most of the trail is on a well trodden path, the last portion is a scramble over rocks and is often pretty steep. The view from the top rewards your efforts and make you feel like you have just joined the "Track Town" community.

And that's the incredible part: you're in a wildlife park w/in a few minutes of downtown. The reward at the top, after a hard scrabble over the boulders, is a spectacular view all the way to the Sisters mountains over a 100 miles away.

I was excited to see the views from the top and I wasn't disappointed. It took about 40 minutes to reach the summit and I thought the first 2/3 of the trail were relatively easy, but the last 1/3 or 1/4 was a bit more steep and rocky. I'd recommend shoes with good tread (I would've preferred hiking boots but only had Nikes with me on this trip); that last part of the trail, the rocks were pretty smooth and not level, so I was very cautious. There were a lot of people on the trail of all ages so I think it's manageable for most. The views were wonderful from the top - I could see Autzen and snow capped mountains in the distance - well worth the hike. There are port-a-potties at the entrance to the trail but no food or parking lot supervision, so it's wise to bring water & snacks and leave nothing in your car.

I used to live on this butte. Deep in the forest. Like a little elf. Once a week I would climb the 3 miles, through old growth forest, to the bald butte top, eat my lunch and enjoy the spectacular views. The butte looks over Eugene and defines its southern sky-line.
