“Most enjoyable stay-wonderful staff”
Reviewed June 3, 2012

I spent two nights at Inn at the 5th while on business in Eugene. The staff is amazing! Friendly, helpful, competent and looking for ways to improve your stay. The bed was very comfortable. Showers great for tall people. The availability of a shuttle 24/7 was extremely beneficial and meant I didn't need to rent a car. They were patient and accommodating when my flight was delayed and were there to pick me up at midnight. I recommend Marche' for meals, wonderful food, great staff as most of Eugene knows.

Room Tip: My room overlooked the courtyard. Love the balcony with table & chairs. All rooms are quiet.

From the moment we drove up, the staff nicely insisted on helping us at every opportunity. They were happy, helpful, and very respectful. Some high-end hotels have people working there who act like they're doing you a favor. The Inn at the 5th had an outstanding staff. The whole place was really clean, relatively quiet, and they appeared to spare no expense on anything. The bed was one of the best we've ever slept on. We'll certainly be back for a more extended stay.

The Inn at the 5th has a lot of cool things going for it. It also has a few drawbacks. In sum it is definitely a head of the class contender if this is the price range you're shopping in for a Eugene hotel. (Rack rates of roughly $190 for a standard King to $370 for a Jr. Suite.)

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
If convenient location matters to you, it is hard to imagine a better one in Eugene. You can walk to Marche or Noli, both in the 5th Street Market, for lunch or dinner or a block behind the Inn to eat at Belly. Also, Rye is just a mile or so away.

The 5th Street Market also offers a host of small stores and the complex is fun with indoor and outdoor spaces blending together. One of our favorite places when we go to Eugene.

The Inn's location also presents some drawbacks. As example, an Amtrak train runs right behind the Inn. The rooms have been sound proofed, but this train is close enough to know it's there. We think that is a charming thing. You can mitigate the noise by the right room location, so ask about this when you make your reservation.

SIZE
If size matters to you in lodging properties, the Inn is about a perfect size. Small enough to be a boutique hotel, with all the personalized service typically delivered in that genre, but large enough for amenities like room service, car service (see THIS N THAT) and a spa in the building.

SERVICE
If friendly and efficient service matters to you, the young, well trained staff here gets that right for sure. Not to mention rooms and public spaces are sparkling. Bravo!

ROOMS
Most rooms have small outdoor balconies but the rooms are on the smallish size for this price point. (We had a chance to see several from Jr .Suite to King to Double Queen.) If you're looking for a larger room, you may want to consider the few on the property that do not have balconies as they have some additional interior space and window seats. But outside of the Jr. Suite - which was very spacious - even the window seat rooms were not overly large. Also, the windows in those non-balcony rooms are non operable, which we consider a drawback.

Rooms that face inward, around a small courtyard, may offer more insulation from street - and train - noise. The latter doesn't bother us a bit and we prefer the outward orientation. Note that on some summer evenings there is live music planned for the courtyard and so you'll be in the mix of that if you choose a room with that outlook.

For us, the Inn at the 5th falls a bit short in delivering the understated, casual elegance room décor of others in the class in Oregon, as in The Allison in Newberg or The Stephanie in Cannon Beach. That said, rooms here are nicely appointed. They include things like beds made for the Inn, good quality linens, fireplaces (in most rooms - a few do not have this appointment) and HDTV service. Something we liked about the bathrooms is they were shower only and shower was spacious. And a big thumbs up for the Keurig coffee makers in room.

ROOM SERVICE
Room service is provided by Marche. Also, there is a small butler's cupboard associated with each room, so if you don't want to open the door in whatever attire you may be in (or not in) your order is placed in the cupboard for you to retrieve.

THIS N THAT:

1) CAR SERVICE: The Inn has a town car and a larger passenger van (both Mercedes) available for free transport within a 4 mile radius of the hotel.

2) ACCESSIBILITY: Like most public spaces in Eugene, the 5th Street Market is nicely, universally accessible and so is this Inn. Not certain whether the car service van option is wheelchair accessible...so check in advance.

3) THEME ROOMS: Some rooms are "theme" based. As in one that has an umbrella and Lucite rain drops and Wellie rain boots mounted in a cubby behind the king sized bed. In another the theme is African Safari. In another Mid Century "glam" and so on. If that matters to you, be sure to ask about it when making your reservation. (I'm a "no themes" type.)

4) OREGON ARTISTS: The property has art of all kinds created by Oregon artists. As example, in the lobby a glass art fixture on the ceiling by a Sisters (Oregon) artist that is evocative of both the sun and Chihuly's work. Nice.

5) LOBBY: Although smaller than some, it is both spacious feeling and cozy at the same time, with a fireplace on the wall and that great art / glass installation above. If you want to linger there, you might like to know that they offer wine service in the lobby too.

In an area of motels and "highway style" lodging, this place is a treasure. It could easily be a NYC boutique hotel with its Asian decor and sophisticated appointments--great lighting, larger bathroom with great shower, fireplace, wonderful bedding, etc. Highly recommend. The staff is terrific too.

The only negative is the sound of the train as it roars through the town. I never heard it during the night but my husband did. If you are a light sleeper this might be a issue, but you would miss out on a great place if this was an issue for you.

This was one of the best experiences I have had in lodging ... EVER! I am in the hotel business in Minnesota and they inspired me! I stayed from Sat (5)- Tuesday ( 8th, just got home yesterday.) I have never posted a review before but had to tell everyone considering a hotel in Eugene what an amazing place this is. The staff is ABOVE AND BEYOND friendly. The bellman , front desk, management and staff were all amazing and genuine. I am going to book my trip for next fall's Duck football games as soon as possible because when people find out about this GEM they are going to be sold out every night! The area is also amazing with the variety of restaurants and shops at the 5th St. Market. I miss this place already and can't wait for September!

Room Tip: Anything with a balcony! So awesome to sit outside with coffee in the morning or wine at night!

I travel all over the world, and this was one of my best experiences. A well thought-out hotel, new and nice touches, and a friendly, competent staff. We felt like we were in a boutique hotel in San Francisco or such--beautiful, calming lobby area with check-in at a private desk, luxurious bed and linens, nice in-room amenities. Asked nicely for an upgrade on a busy weekend, and was given one with a smile. Gotta like that! Plus, it's just Eugene, so staff is down to earth and really aim to please--none of that big-city snobbery (and I live in a big city). Minor celebrity sighting at valet park area confirmed this is the best place to be in Eugene. Great restaurants nearby and easy walk to campus and Saturday market. No more Hilton for me!

My husband and I just spent 4 nights in Eugene at the Inn at the 5th. We had heard about the Inn from friends who lived in the area and made a reservation when we were going to visit our son who is a student in town. From the minute we checked in and were greeted by Amber we were surprised and impressed. The hotel just opened in January and everything is brand new and stylish, featuring art and furnishings by local artists. The location is prime and sits in the middle of a charming area of shops and restaurants. In fact, Marche, a terrific bistro is right next door and is the source of the room service for the Inn. Our junior suite was spacious, well appointed and unique; flat screen tvs, Italian linen bedding, refrigerator and sleek, roomy bathroom. Everything was impeccable and well thought out.
The young staff was upbeat, attentive and knowledgeable. Their familiarity with Eugene was an asset since we were unfamiliar with the area; their directions and restaurant recommendations were spot on. We already have another reservation to stay at the Inn and look forward to it. I honestly hesitated to write this review because while I think it is important to give credit to businesses that “get it”, I worry that the Inn will get so full I won't be able to book a reservation!

Room Tip: The balconies are a nice feature...it's great to leave the door open to the breeze.
