“Quiet, clean, peaceful old hotel in a beautiful valley”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2012

My wife and I stayed here in September, 2012 and were delighted with the accommodations and the people. It may be old, but has been renovated completely and is sparkly clean. The food is wonderful, and no one could possibly go hungry. Easily accesible at the end of the paved road, it is definitely remote, which to us is a wonderful advantage. There are two houses in the town of 5 people, and I think we met all of their inhabitants in our 2 day stay. The loop road to the north takes you to the Round Barn, a stop of fascinating historical interest. Southeastern Oregon is for the adventurous to some degree, as planning for fuel and feed is a must, as stations are far apart. If you are looking for luxury, swimming pools, hot tubs, tv, and all the rest of the popular creature comforts, this is not for you.

We booked a three bedroom ranch house on a working ranch in Diamond Valley only a few miles from Hotel Diamond. Best experience ever; our family got to watch cattle being moved, feed horses apples, be entertained by peacocks, turkeys and chickens! Coyotes howling at night, even laid under the stars and full moon one night! Once in a lifetime experience for some of family! Will do it again!

Room Tip: N/A stayed at ranch house

This is a quaint, small hotel located more than 150 miles from any freeway in a lovely valley in SE Oregon. Very quiet, simple but clean rooms decorated in old ranch/farmhouse style. The delicious home-cooked meals offer a different selection each evening served family-style. Daily fresh-baked breads. Wonderful desserts. The perfect place to relax as there is no internet and very limited cell service.

Room Tip: Rooms upstairs share baths, other rooms have baths

Accomodations are slim in this part of the world but we found a gem in Hotel Diamond. Some say this hotel is Diamond and we're inclined to believe since the population is a total of 5. Straight out of the "old west" this hotel has so much charm,is really a "bed and breakfast" and for a few dollars more will serve you an "over the top" dinner including dessert which will leave you rubbing your belly in delight and satisfaction. This out of the way part of southeastern Oregon is really a trip-not a weekend getaway.Once you go, you'll be planning your next adventure back to that part of the world to get away from it all.

We spent two nights at the Hotel Diamond, using it as a base for our journeys up Steens Mountain and birding around Malheur Wildlife area. It was a relaxing and pleasant getaway. They served a nice baked fish dinner with strawberry shortcake on Saturday. Since I have a fish allergy they gave me delicious meatballs for the main course. Sunday was a super great steak dinner and whiskey bread pudding. Breakfast was all-you-want extra large continental with ham, hard boiled eggs, fresh bread, cereals, coffee, fruit, yogurt, etc. The screen porch was a nice place to cool down with a glass of wine or pop (purchased from the small gift store) and poured in a frosted glass after the hot day traveling through the high desert. The room was a little small for two people, and we had a shared bathroom, but the bed had a new mattress and there was a great air conditioner and fan to cool down the room. Not for those requiring 5 star hotels...the stars were outside with the Great Horned Owls. Do bring mosquito repellant as the hotel is in a marshy, rural area, miles from the local grocery store, or visit in the Fall after the pests are gone. I must mention that the employees are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the area.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms have private baths, but you will pay extra for those. We didn't have to wait f...

We stayed here in May 2012 for the first time; hospitality was unsurpassed, owners and staff were all accommodating, friendly, and knowledgeable of the area. Loved the setting, surroundings, hotel and meals. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat!

I've stayed here once with my wife when we were on a bird watching trip. I also come here every fall for the wine and dinner combo.

If you're expecting a 5 star experience then stay at a resort somewhere else. Diamond is about 60 miles from Burns in the middle of the Steens Mt. Lots of wildlife and hiking trails. The Diamond Hotel is the only bussiness for 45 miles. It's cute, does have bugs in season and the dinners are just like your grandmother made, not 5 star but very good comfort food with great desserts.

Lots to do here, day trips into the Steens, fishing, hiking, bird watching and learning about the early history of Oregon. If you like shopping and being waited on hand and foot don't come you'll hate it. But if a slooooow life style, friendly people and relaxing is what you're looking for I would give this place a 10!
