Really I never complain about bad service or bad food but for this review I can not tell you about the food because we left before we could get served! WE went here because we wanted just a bowl of chowder for lunch and to relax. There was only one server and maybe five tables that were busy. Within 10 minutes the place was full. We still had our menus and no service. Finally another server came and started serving on the opposite end. Instead of getting orders then drinks-- he was doing on table at a time-- she was doing the same, which seemed to take very long. After more than 30 minutes with our menus at hand, no drinks and everyone around us with food we decided to leave. I understand it was busy but please--- train your wait staff to handle busy afternoons!!!! Or get a manager that cares.

My family came to visit me from Michigan and I thought that taking them to Depoe Bay would really allow them to see the full Oregon Coast and maybe a chance to see whales. My parents and I had decided to go to the Chowder Bowl for dinner (I wanted them to experience good North West Chowder). Well to our surprise it was the worst. The service was slow and unfriendly, the chowder was thick and tasted like paste and the owner was rude when we had asked to talk to her. As we tryed to enjoy the rest of the food, other people around us were complaining about the service as well. Needless to say I will never go back to the Chowder Bowl or recomend it to some one else.

My friends and I were in Depoe Bay on 2/17/07. We decided on the Chowder Bowl because that was exactly what we wanted...Chowder. We sat ourselves as the sign said and after a few minutes we received our menus. We ordered our food, a very simple order, three bowls of chowder, one basket of chicken strips and fries, and a side salad. After a 20 minute wait, our food finally arrived. Very good chowder but cold fries and warm salad. I didn't receive a fork with my salad, so I flagged down the waitress and asked for one and she said she'd bring one right out. Ten minutes later, I still didn't have a fork. So as she leaving another table I asked her again and she finally brought one to me. This isn't something I should've had to ask for in the first place. The waitress never came to make sure our meal was ok or to refill our drinks. Meanwhile, I could see that other people were getting upset about the service. One group of people at a table near us actually got up and left after waiting for over 20 minutes to place their orders without any service. I heard another woman comment that this was the worst service she'd ever had, and I agree.

After 10 years away from Oregon (I lived in OR for about 18 mos. and returned to VA in '96) I returned in late June '06 to visit inlaws and see my old friend, The Pacific Ocean. A visit to Depoe Bay was a favorite road trip back in '96 and strolling along the sea wall was AN ABSOLUTE MUST for the wife and I on this trip.

I am pleased to say that The Chowder Bowl still boasts fast service, the same beautiful location (...right on Hwy 10, across from the sea wall and whale watching areas) and a very good value for the dollar compared to other area eaterys. They'll also treat you like a local whether you are a Native Oregonian or a weekend traveler with a VERY obvious southern accent! (LOL!)
This last visit, My wife and I split an order of lightly battered fried shrimp (delicious!) and we each had a bowl of chowder and garlic toast. Most everything on the menu is tasty, I am sure, but the name says it all... Order the chowder! Get a bowl (it is too good to just get a cup!) and be sure to order a side of garlic toast!

This was always a good supper spot too but The Chowder Bowl is BY FAR my favorite lunch spot between Tillamook County and Newport.
